The Beads & Pieces bowls series features beautifully crafted black ceramic bowls with pink beading accents, ceramic floral bouquets and wooden beads. The ceramists' workmanship is seen in the graceful curves executed in black ceramic, a traditional Peruvian pottery technique. Motifs from the indigenous Shipibo tribe were also incorporated into the beading.
Dutch designer Hella Jongerius (born 1963) combines craft techniques with modern technology to create objects that are strikingly new and provocative. Jongerius' range is diverse and broadly derived. Her designs typically employ a mélange of media such as ceramics, steel, plastic, felt, and precious metals. The resulting designs emphasize simple forms, rich textures, and materials that often retain traces of their origin and purpose. Jongerius works in Rotterdam where she heads her own design company, JongeriusLab. Her designs have been manufactured and sold by Vitra, Cappellini, and IKEA to name a few. Jongerius' designs are also in the permanent collections of several leading museums including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The first survey of Jongerius work was published by Phaidon in 2003.
Beads & Pieces, a Design with Conscience project, is a four-piece ceramic collection designed by Hella Jongerius. The collection is handcrafted by artisans located in the primary coca leaf-growing region of Peru. With the help of Aid to Artisans, a non-profit organization that provides practical assistance to artisans worldwide, Artecnica offers an alternative economic reality to the people of this dangerous and oppressed area.
In 2002 Artecnica founded Design With Conscience, a program for Artecnica to manufacture and product products in accordance with humanitarian and environmentally friendly principles. Artecnica had invited talented designers of international fame to contribute new ideas to an ever-expanding design collection and to team with them with artisans in need around the world, invigorating commerce and assisting surrounding communities.

beautiful design + great program
This is a lovely example of a worthy Atrecnica series that has already spun off some great items. The small bowl in particular is my fave. One note: the price on these just jumped so I'd buy before it jumps agains.
Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
