Bunaco Company

Bunaco Company

BUNACO originated in Aomori, Japan in 1956. Bunaco use the beech trees of Aomori Prefecture, which boasts the greatest number of beech trees in Japan. The production of Bunaco is innovative and unprecedented in the world.

How Bunaco is made:

  1. Making Thin Boards of Beech Tree. Domestically-grown beech tree sections are cut into thin boards, approximately 2meters long by 1mm thick.
  2. Making Strips out of the Boards. The thin boards are processed into tape-like strips, approx.1cm wide.
  3. Rolled-up. The strips are rolled up into a coil, which requires the skill of a proficient craftsperson.
  4. Forming. The flat coiled board, now similar to a Baumukuchen Torte, is shaped into a container.
  5. Finishing.Using exclusive methods, the gluing and coating are done.

As illustrated above, Bunaco uses paper thin sheets of virgin beech wood, cut into strips and tightly coiled around a base. Bowls are then pushed and pulled by hand to make a solid body. This simple technique permits stunning shapes that are impossible to achieve in other woods. And the environmentally-friendly technique produces no wood waste.
