London-based designer Stephen Johnson explores mythical worlds where horses ride on the backs of dogs and mirrors transform into large gift bows. He must take a lot of notes when exploring, because his fanciful design perspective easily transports the observer to these dreamlike landscapes. As a fan of kitsch and ornamentation, Johnson creates designs that meet our cognitive needs. Many of his products take one down memory lane. Small figurines, flashy retro pendants and old bedtime stories seem to be a source of inspiration for Johnson. He is quoted as saying, "My work appears at first glance to be a playful reference to the functionless - each piece a flamboyant procession of splendor and excess, mere celebrations of the lovely, nice and pretty. Yet aside from visual effect, such objects provide creative ground to consider our need for escapism in our everyday lives."
