Fabio Di Bartolomei

Designer: Fabio Di Bartolomei

Fabio Di Bartolomei was born in Udine, Italy and makes his home there today. In 1979 he opened his studio there and has since established international collaborations that lead him to set up offices in New York City, Brendale Brisbane in Australia and Warsaw, Poland. He works in industrial and construction design, exhibition set-ups and interior design.

The primary subjects of Di Bartolomei's creative thought, to which he gives great importance, are the daily needs of each individual in relation to his habitat. With this in mind, the designer starts his research for the right balance between image and functionality. The expression of this can also be seen in his design works which he believes must always suit the functions for which they were intended. He feels that in a project, the main purpose of a designer's expression is to conceptualize and then create objects for living. Relevant importance is also given to research in materials, which he believes is fundamental for a project to be able to become part of formal and functional daily living. He has designed for some of the most important Italian and international companies dealing in fields that range from furniture, pens, electronics, etc.

Some of his works have also been selected and exhibited in museums like "The Museum of Modern Art" (MOMA) in New York, in the exhibition of "Mutant materials in contemporary design" and in "The Cornig Museum of Glass", Cornig-New York. In 1996 he was awarded the prize "Marcello D'Olivo" for design; in 1997 and 1999 he won the prize "Top Ten" at the International Chair Exhibition in Udine and the same prize in 2007 for the chair project "LASER" designed for IMS. In the same year, he won the International "Interior Innovation Award - Cologne 2007" which is held in Cologne (Germany) and he received a nomination to the "Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2008", the prestigious award assigned by the German Federal Ministry of Economy and Technology, which is the most important award in Germany and for this reason it is defined as the "Award of awards". He has also worked on several cultural projects and the following are worthy of special mention: in 1999 he designed the Siderale clock, called "Star Game" , where the flowing of time reflects a philosophy of live that is a more natural and human. This masterpiece is exhibited in Udine, Italy in the Giovanni da Udine theatre and in Prague, Czech Republic in the astronomic observatory. In 2001 he collaborated with the setting up of the exhibition dedicated to the poet Rainer Maria Rilke in the National Library in Prague, Czech Republic. In 2002 his works were entered into "The Museum of Modern Art Design Encyclopaedia" published by the Museum Of Modern Art in New York. And besides all this, since 2006, he has been a columnist for the magazine "Realtà Industriale", the official publication by Association of Industrialists in the province of Udine and is currently lecturing Design at the Faculty of Architecture in Trieste.
