Ettore Sottsass was the first designer to take Emeco chairs out of their typical environments - navy ships, hospitals, prisons - and use them in contemporary interior design projects. The Nine-0™ re-imagines the classic Emeco 1006 Navy® chair, manufactured by Emeco since 1944. These are the last chairs designed by Mr. Sottsass, who died on December 31, 2007 at the age of 90.
Brushed or polished aluminum armchair with Open Back. Integrally colored, soft polyurethane seat available in five colors, all suitable for outdoor use. Stacks 6 high.
Handmade from 80% recycled aluminum. Designed to last for 150 years. The Nine-0™ Open Back Stacking Armchair is tempered for ultimate strength in a proprietary 77-step process. Emeco is the only company in the world to do this.

Ettore Sottsass, born in 1917 in Innsbruck, is an Italian architect and designer of the late 20th century. He founded the Memphis Group, an influential Italian design and architecture movement of the 1980s.
Originally an architect, Sottsass became a consulting designer for typewriter manufacturer Olivetti.

Emeco has an interesting history beginning in 1944 with the 1006 Navy chair, the granddaddy of Emeco that was designed to withstand the harsh environment on a Navy ship. (Legend has it, the seat of the Emeco 1006 Navy Chair was modeled after the seat of actress Betty Grable.) Since then Emeco has had some new editions, designed by some good friends: Philippe Starck, Frank Gehry and Ettore Sottsass to name a few.
