FLOS

FLOS was founded in 1962 are the Italian Lighting Specialists. The very same year FLOS began producing a number of lamps that were to become classics in Italian industrial design. These first lamps were Arco, Relemme, Toio and Taccia — all designed by Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni. As a tangible proof of FLOS Lighting's timeless design and technical excellence, these lamps continue to be produced today.

It all started with cocoon...
In 1959 Arturo Eisenkeil from Merano, an importer of cocoon — a spray-on plastic coating produced in the United States - was tracking down possible applications for this new material. He joined forces with Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina and set up a company to produce lighting fixtures. This marked the beginning of the long-standing association in the area of design with the Castiglioni brothers and Tobia Scarpa. The first cocoon lamps ever created were the offspring of this collaboration: Viscontea, Taraxacum and Gatto by the Castiglioni brothers and Fantasma by Scarpa.

FLOS moved from Merano to the province of Brescia in 1964: At first to Nave and then to the current premises in Bovezzo. Sergio Gandini became chairman of FLOS in 1965. In 1974, the company became the owner of Arteluce — one of the key Italian companies in the industrial design sector. Gino Sarfatti, an industrialist and designer, is the founder of Arteluce. Several models designed by Sarfatti himself have been incorporated into the product range.

From the very outset, FLOS has been characterized by its high-quality approach to lamp design and production. Many of the numerous lamps designed for the company, first by Achille and Piergiacomo, are undoubtedly some of FLOS Lighting's best-known and most successful products of industrial design. They have won awards and historical critical accolades, and are included in all the most important collections and design museums around the world.

Achille Castiglioni

Born in Milan in 1918, Achille Castiglioni started working as an architect and designer with his brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo in 1938. One of the great masters of Italian design, he was a founding member of ADI in the fifties. The long list of awards he has received include eight Compassi d'Oro. His activity as a designer is an unmistakable blend of simplicity, irony and fun and its shows his close interest in the way objects are used, in the potential offered by technology and in the use of new materials.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Modern The Parentesi blends the concept of a floor light and a ceiling lamp by including a ceiling mount and floor base. Although strong and stable, the Parentesi gives the illusion of lightness with its slender silhouette and cable that appears to float in space.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The product was great, the packing abhorrent The product received was the exact product I had been hoping for; however, the product was not packed in a box big enough for its size and thus some of the components of the light burst from the box within shipping and according to UPS, elements of the lamp had been rolling around the truck whilst in delivery. I was not pleased to see a few scrapes on the base of the lamp because it had burst from the box and was bouncing freely around the UPS truck. I hope in the future lamps will be shipped in more appropriate boxes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Classic Industrial Design When one sets up this lamp one sees why it is part of the permanent collection of NYC's MoMA. The tension-based design is industrially artistic and is minimally instrusive on sight-lines. The only negative is that the bulb is VERY bright and NON-directional. I would not recommend this lamp for "spot" lighting, but more fore indirect or higher ceiling-to-floor lighting effects. I have several lined up like a floor screen and the effect is dramatic. I would recommend this lighting solution to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love At First Sight I fell in love with Parentesi the first time I saw it 7 years ago; and now I have 6 of them at home. The installation definitely requires some planning, especially the placement of the ceiling mount for the tension wire. But once you got over the handy-man stage, the product is definitely worth the trouble. You can use it as a focal point, or it can easily blend in with the surrounding. Parentesi is a true testiment of "Less Is More."

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Classic design, hard to adjust I love the minimalist industrial design of this lamp. My only complaint is the difficulty to adjust the angle of the bulb. The part of the rubber connector that spins is attached with a flush, headless screw that you can't tighten up. When angled at the wall, the weight of the bulb pulls it down 'til it aims at the floor. After a few tries, I found that sliding a plastic washer in there helps keep it in place.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent purchase! We needed a floor lamp for our bedroom that didn't take up a lot of the footprint in the room, and had always had our eye on the Parentesi. Its completely exceeded our expectations! Installation was relatively painless, and it gives off just the right amount of light while looking sleek and modern.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from child appropriate?? I really would like to install this lamp in my living room...but I have an 18month year old boy. Would this lamp be child safe/durable enough for a little bit of handling? I worry that a traditional floor lamp will just be continually knocked over. Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully designed will fit into any and all corners! The Parentesi just hangs there a beautiful abstraction of floor lamp doing what it was designed to do! I had a little difficulty with attaching it to the ceiling, but that's me. Eventually all is perfect! I would highly recommend this light and design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Achille Castiglioni's Parentesi Floor Lamp brings refined whimsy and function to any interior Achille Castiglioni was a genius of design. The Parentesi Floor Lamp has always made me smile - it's simplicity is still amazing and style fresh. I've used them in lieu of wall sconces and as seating area reading lights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, but not for little children Hi, this is the most beautiful lamp, and I have coveted it for years. But please don't install it around little children, for the sake of the children. Wait a few years until they are past the dangerous age.
