George Nelson

When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps" — moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of."

An early zap came in the 1930s, when he was an architectural student in Rome. Before returning home, an idea struck him: He would travel Europe and interview leading modern architects, hoping to get the articles published in the U.S. He succeeded, and in the process introduced the U.S. design community to the European avant-garde. This set in motion a sequence of what he called "lucky" career breaks that were really the inevitable outcomes of his brilliance as a designer, teacher, and author.

The first break was being named an editor of Architectural Forum magazine. Working on a story there in 1942, he was looking at aerial photos of blighted cities when--zap!--he developed the concept of the downtown pedestrian mall, which was unveiled in the Saturday Evening Post.

Soon after, another zap led to the Storagewall, the first modular storage system and a forerunner of systems furniture. The Storagewall was showcased in a 1945 Life magazine article, causing a sensation in the furniture industry. Herman Miller founder D.J. DePree saw the article and was so impressed that he paid a visit to Nelson in New York and convinced him to be his director of design, which spurred Nelson to found his design firm, George Nelson & Associates. The warm personal and professional relationship between Nelson and DePree yielded a stunning range of products, from the playful Marshmallow Sofa to the first L-shaped desk, a precursor of today's workstation.

Nelson once wrote that Herman Miller "is not playing follow-the-leader." That's one reason why George Nelson & Associates worked with Herman Miller for over 25 years as they shepherded design into the modern era.

During this same period, George Nelson & Associates also created many landmark designs of products, showrooms, and exhibitions for a variety of companies and organizations.

Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as antihuman." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding.

Nelson did so as few are able, and, with the help of well-timed zaps, he helped define modern, humane design.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Such elegant, clean design - works perfectly hanging in a large window. It looks like sculpture when balanced with 2 other Nelson pendant lights in different shapes hanging at various lengths. Functions beautifully in high ceiling kitchen area with lots of glass.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful! We ordered three of these GN pendants and hung all of them together, they are really gorgeous and make quite a statement! Our electrician installed them in no time at all and they are really stunning especially at night. No one ever remarked about our last light fixture (which was new) but everyone notices these pendants right away, they are very unique and modern. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the price is somewhat high for the simplicity of the pendant but I do realize that I am paying for George Nelsons fame and design. Your site had a good price and of course no tax with free shipping, what else can you ask for!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small Size Perfect for Bedroom/Office I have a 1959 ranch house and am in the process of converting a bedroom into a home office. The Nelson Pear lamp was perfect. It's easy to install and an ideal mid-century modern upgrade to the awful ceiling fan the was there before. One thing I didn't read in the reviews was which size Pear Lamp would be right for a bedroom. So, the small is perfect for a 12X12 room. It would also work in a foyer or smaller kitchen. If you're putting it in a dining room, great room, living room or den, you might want to go with the medium. Especially if you have 10-foot ceilings. But in a smaller room with typical mid-century ceiling height, the small is the one to go with. And, yeah, it has a funky smell out of the box. Open a window for 48 hours and you're good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classic no matter where you hang it This is our second Nelson Bubble lamp purchase and we love this one just as much as the first. We hung it in a small alcove and it provides more than enough light with the 60w bulb. Our house is over 100 years old but we've tried to go more modern with the furnishings. This looks great even with our old wood floors and our large detailed mouldings (actually makes those things look better). As always, working with Y-lighting has been a pleasure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really fantastic and simple design The lamp is extremely well packed, and the easiest pendant we've ever installed. The shade materials are very solid & well made, and yet retain a light, airy feel. The simple design doesn't distract once hung -- it adds a quiet modern elegance to the room. And the white shade materials diffuse the light perfectly. Ylighting provided prompt email communication and shipping service. We are trying to resist purchasing another one...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from beautiful lamp that softens the light from florescent bulbs I almost feel silly reviewing this lamp, since it is such a design icon, but it is like functional sculpture. Despite its modern shape, it looks just lovely in the entryway of my traditional house. Because of the soft off white color of the fabric shade, it mellows the florescent-y cast of my "green" light bulbs to a more traditional soft light. Highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb I purchased this lamp last summer for my newly renovated, contemporary style condo. It is hanging in my dining room, which has vibrant blue-ish / purple-ish walls, so the fresh white color really pops. This lamp gives off a bright but soft glow and is very easy on the eyes. I love the unique shape. I have absolutely no complaints about this lamp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nelson Pear lamp is a classic modern fixture with an unexpected fun shape. I have used most of the classic mid-century modern Nelson lamps in my Interior office projects and I just tried the Pear shape lamp. I love it. It still has the classic look of the Nelson lamps but it is not a typical shape. It gives the space an unexpected hint of fun and a great classic modern look at the same time. I will use it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent purchase and value! I am thoroughly pleased with the Bubble Pear Lamp. The framework and materials used are of excellent quality. While I have not seen it installed yet, I was thoroughly impressed by the packaging of the pendant and little use of packing materials. The pendants also shipped out quickly and arrived in the specified time frame. Thank you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Classic I bought three bubble lamps to hang in my dining room. I knew I wanted the saucer and the cigar and it was a difficult decision choosing between the round and the pear. The unusual shape of the pear won out. It looks great with the other two. Ordering was a breeze. Shipping was very quick and everything arrived without a problem.
