Rated 4 out of 5 by from Need A bigger saucer! I am currently remodeling a 70's townhouse and wanted to set the tone with a few signature pieces. The Nelson Saucer Lamp over the dining room table and the Cigar Lamp in the stair well hit the mark. However, having just seen the new Brad Pitt movie, Tree of Life, the large Nelson lamp over the dining room table in the film's mid-century modern home allowed me to see that I need a bigger Saucer. I ordered the medium and will now relocate it to the top of the stair landing and order a large Saucer for the dining room. Thank you Brad Pitt and YLiving for helping me to see and realize the Larger light!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Timeless Piece Of Art We ordered the Nelson Saucer Lamp in a medium size to serve as the main light source in our living room and couldn't be happier. At first we had some trepidation as to whether the piece would work without hanging low over a table but it filled the space perfectly. You cannot see the bulb unless you stand directly under the fixture and crane your neck straight up. It brightens the room with a modern statement even when not illuminated. This is great design where form truly follows function

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic for a reason Looked for months for the "right" ceiling fixture for our large, high-ceilinged master bedroom. Since aesthetics, function, and money were all priorities, we considered and rejected a multitude of lights: too small, too pricey, not enough light, wrong look. Sigh... And then d'oh!! (slaps forehead) we remembered the Nelson Bubble Lamps. Certainly couldn't beat the price for the sheer size of the large Saucer, and online pictures indicated it worked in all sorts of decor, not just modern, and it emanates light up, down, and all around with a lovely glow. So we pulled the trigger, and Y-Lighting, as usual, is a joy to buy from. Status e-mails regularly so we knew exactly where our fixture was and when to expect it. Securely packaged. My husband installed it with just a little help from me. And, it is perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great looking pendant lamp Product arrived on time with no damage, packed very well. Easy to install. The saucer looks great over my white laminated dining room table. Bought the medium lamp, table is 36" diameter, do not recommend getting larger lamp for this size table. The medium is perfect size. Looks great in day time with light off and looks amazing at night with light on and dimmed. Highly recommend this lamp. Fun to look at.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this pendant light!! This light is a beautiful, classic reproduction of the George Nelson saucer lamp. It's well made, elegant and much more impressive "in person" than online. It will make a tasteful statement in my mid-century decor; it's both minimalist and fun. In short, it's lovely. It was shipped and delivered swiftly, and carefully packaged. I recommend this item and this site for a positive purchasing experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a classic! Just bought and installed the Nelson saucer pendant lamp (medium) above our dining room table. This lamp is a timeless, design classic and is even more stunning in person. The very modest price point means you're going to see this lamp in homes and design magazines more often than not. But the price combined with its versatility and sheer organic beauty make it the perfect lighting/design element.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic design, clean looks, what else would you ask for? Package arrived in great condition. Super light. It took longer to remove the existing lamp then it took to install the Saucer Lamp. Installation was a cinch. The quality of the lamp is superb, and your eyes are drawn to it everytime you go into the kitchen. It complements the DSR Eames chairs we picked up earlier from Yliving. Keep up the great work yliving and thanks for your superior service.

George Nelson

Designer: George Nelson

When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps"--moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of."

An early zap came in the 1930s, when he was an architectural student in Rome. Before returning home, an idea struck him: He would travel Europe and interview leading modern architects, hoping to get the articles published in the U.S. He succeeded, and in the process introduced the U.S. design community to the European avant-garde. This set in motion a sequence of what he called "lucky" career breaks that were really the inevitable outcomes of his brilliance as a designer, teacher, and author.

The first break was being named an editor of Architectural Forum magazine. Working on a story there in 1942, he was looking at aerial photos of blighted cities when--zap!--he developed the concept of the downtown pedestrian mall, which was unveiled in the Saturday Evening Post.

Soon after, another zap led to the Storagewall, the first modular storage system and a forerunner of systems furniture. The Storagewall was showcased in a 1945 Life magazine article, causing a sensation in the furniture industry. Herman Miller founder D.J. DePree saw the article and was so impressed that he paid a visit to Nelson in New York and convinced him to be his director of design, which spurred Nelson to found his design firm, George Nelson & Associates. The warm personal and professional relationship between Nelson and DePree yielded a stunning range of products, from the playful Marshmallow Sofa to the first L-shaped desk, a precursor of today's workstation.

Nelson once wrote that Herman Miller "is not playing follow-the-leader." That's one reason why George Nelson & Associates worked with Herman Miller for over 25 years as they shepherded design into the modern era.

During this same period, George Nelson & Associates also created many landmark designs of products, showrooms, and exhibitions for a variety of companies and organizations.

Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as antihuman." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding.
