Herman Miller

Overview

Design by Jerome Caruso, 2005.
Made in the U.S.A. by Herman Miller.

The Celle® Fully Adjustable Chair is a practical work chair that fits 95% of the North American population. Yet it still provides the core custom controls (including seat height, armrest position and tilt tension) for which Herman Miller is known.

Celle uses a cutting edge Cellular Suspension™ seat and back material that is lightweight and breathable and evenly distributes the user's weight over the seat while allowing the back to provide flexible, continuous support. Harmonic™ Tilt keeps users balanced and in control leaning forward or reclining. Integrated, passive PostureFit contour in Celle's backrest ensures proper pelvic stabilization promoting improved lower back comfort. And upgraded features on this model include adjustable arms, seat depth, lumbar support and tilt control. Celle is a smart chair from every angle.

The Celle® Fully Adjustable Chair features a Tilt Limiter and Seat Angle, Adjustable Arms, Adjustable Seat Height, Cellular Suspension™ seat and back, Adjustable Lumbar and Hard Casters on a 5-star base. Select from three height-adjustment ranges and seven seat/frame finish combinations. Also available in the Celle® Basic Chair.

The Celle® Fully Loaded Chair is extremely durable, easy to maintain, and offers a long list of ergonomic features. Celle is also exceptionally earth-friendly, made of recyclable content and offering a whopping 99% recyclability upon end of its useful life. Select from six seat/frame finish combinations below.

This Fully Adjustable model includes: tilt limiter with seat angle that allows the user to select the tilt range and either a horizontal or 5° forward seat angle; 3-dimensional adjustable arms that each adjust 4" vertically and 1" horizontally and pivot 11° inward and outward; Cellular Suspension seat and back; an adjustable seat depth that adjusts from 15.5" to 18"; and a user-adjustable lumbar support that adjusts 4" in height and 1" in depth; plus passive PostureFit® at the base of the back, below the beltline, that helps achieve healthier posture and improved lower back comfort.

Notes:

Celle Chairs are durable for a long life and carry Herman Miller's comprehensive 12-year, 3-shift warranty. Chair is tested and warranted for use by persons 300 pounds and under.

Jerome Caruso

Designer: Jerome Caruso

At 12 years old, Jerome Caruso discovered his career when a friend of his father introduced him to industrial design — and he heard about a General Motors contest for futuristic car concepts. "I worked in the basement every day after school for months," Caruso remembers, "developing a clay model for the car, transferring the design to a block of wood, and carving it out by hand. That was when I realized what I wanted to do — especially after winning an award."

Caruso refined his design sensibilities in Europe in the 1960s. While a graduate student at the University of Copenhagen, he also worked at that city's premier design office. Deciding to go it alone, he lined up projects in Scandinavia; at age 26 he opened a practice in Brussels with clients in Belgium, England, France, and Germany. Later he returned to the U.S. and again established a one-man studio. His diverse projects ranged from spearheading Motorola's entry into the manufacture of LCD watch modules to designing and engineering the first completely machine-produced stack chair for the U.S. contract market (now in the American Arts collection at the Chicago Art Institute) to his most noted role as Sub-Zero's first and only designer for more than 20 years.

With more than 75 design patents to his credit, Caruso takes a hands-on approach and enjoys doing it all — concepts, drawings, prototypes, and engineering. "The bigger the challenge, the more fun it is to work out the solution," he says.
