Setu™ features a fluid, modern appearance which requires virtually no adjustment. When Burkhard Schmitz, Claudia Plikat, Nicolai Neubert, and Carola Zwick founded Studio 7.5 in Berlin, Germany, they were looking for freedom to work on projects that interested them, freedom from rules, roles, and titles.
And that's pretty much how they've operated ever since. "There are no bosses here," says the group, which also now includes Carola's brother Roland. Preferring to be heard as a single voice, they continue, "Everybody does everything. That's how we cultivate ideas and maintain our openness and curiosity."
The group finds designing office chairs in particular to be the most rewarding. "We define not only how a chair looks but how it performs, even down to the characteristics of the tilt. We're very involved with its physical behavior, because beauty is not only what you see, it's also what you feel."

A beautifully designed, extremely comfortable chair.
This is a beautifully designed, extremely comfortable chair. However it took me a little getting used to. It is a *task* chair, designed to sit you at a desk for long periods and then allow you to stand up at the end of the day and not feel like you’ve spent hours on a rack. This it does. However, by its design, and for it to work its magic, you need to sit in it in the way it was designed for you to sit: upright and with the small of your back pushed against the lumbar supporting web. Many chairs are comfortable because sufficient padding allows you to find a place, like a comfortable couch, by shifting around, sometimes slouching, varying the curve of the spine, etc. None of that here. Although you can shift around, it seemed to me that once you leave what I would call the “ergonomic posture zoneâ€, it loses much of its advantage; if you remain in it, it is incredibly comfortable over long periods.
Besides a variable height adjustment, its only sitting option is that it tilts back. The resistance is perfectly balanced and allows one to shift their weight or stretch back without losing the chair’s ergonomic benefit. I find that I do this fairly frequently both for comfort and as a way to release the psychic tension that accumulates as I work. For the most part this is sufficient and after the first few days of losing old habits, I find I have no particular urge to realign myself in any other way.
I am 6’, 185 lbs. I fit in it just fine, but I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone much larger. For my own comfort I would have added an inch to the seat front to support a little more of my thighs, but this is not a major complaint.
In the end, it’s a Herman Miller chair and deserves the reputation for comfort and quality they have earned. If you spend any time at a desk and it’s in your budget, it will be well worth the initial expense.
Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
