Design by Charles and Ray Eames, 1946. Made in the U.S.A. by Herman Miller.
The unmistakable Eames Molded Plastic chair takes on a different life with each of its base offerings. Historically, the shells have been paired with various base designs to fit a wider range of environments.
The Dowel-Leg base has been reintroduced by Herman Miller. This additional option to the line brings a softer aesthetic to the Eames Molded Plastic Chair. The maple dowel legs include crossed metal rods in Black Umber — distinctly Eames. Shells are carefully manufactured using environmentally friendly, high-impact plastic. And today, the chairs are produced locally in Michigan by Herman Miller, just as the vintage chairs were.
Select from 10 colors: color classics Black, Red, White, Lime Green and Light Blue, and new 2010 colors Aqua Sky, Java, Wafer, Greystone and Sparrow.
A chair that looked like a potato chip. Another that resembled a "well-used first baseman's mitt." A folding screen that rippled...
With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look."
That look and their relationship with Herman Miller started with molded plywood chairs in the late 1940s and includes the world-renowned Eames lounge chair, now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Herman Miller is proud to reintroduce another base option to the Molded Plastic Chair: the wood dowel base. The maple dowel legs bring a softer aesthetic, while the crossed metal rods are distinctly Eames. And the chairs are offered in 10 colors that play beautifully against the maple wood.
Friendly to the earth, Molded Plastic Side Chair shells are made of recyclable polypropylene and are dyed throughout so colors remain vibrant even after years of hard use. For extended comfort, the shell is connected to the base by rubber shock mounts. The dowel-leg base has maple legs with non-adjustable
nylon glides.
Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
