The reintroduction of the Eames Aluminum Group chairs for outdoors puts these iconic pieces back to their original design intent. Herman Miller began producing the Eames Aluminum Group in 1958, originally promoting the chairs as the "leisure group" or alternatively the "indoor-outdoor group". Though it didn't take long for these seating elements to move inside exclusively, perhaps due to their lithe form. Now, this distinctive design returns to its place of origin with materials, finishes and hardware fit for the outdoors.
The Eames Aluminum Group Ottoman was first designed for the outdoor spaces at the modernist Miller House in Columbus, Indiana. Industrialist J. Irwin Miller commissioned the Miller House and Garden project in 1953, with completion in 1957. The building changed the landscape of the small town of Columbus, Indiana and remains one of the country's most highly regarded examples of mid-century Modernist homes. Among its most notable features, the house includes multiple outdoor living and dining areas created by an extended roof and a continuous travertine floor, blurring the distinction between indoors and outdoors. When interior designer Alexander Girard was faced with furnishing the spaces, he noted the lack of high-quality outdoor furniture to Charles Eames. Charles and Ray and the Eames Office responded by designing this innovative group of chairs with aluminum frames tautly supporting a continuous plane of plastic cloth.
The Aluminum Group Outdoor Ottoman features a four-star frame in lightweight die-cast aluminum, a highly durable and corrosion-resistant structure. Seating is suspended within the frame in an outdoor woven mesh material. Available in two powder coat base finishes, Graphite and White, with four outdoor weave fabric seating options.
