Overview

Design by Charles & Ray Eames, 1948.
By Herman Miller.

Charles and Ray Eames adapted molding techniques developed during World War II to mass produce this classic design. A clean, simple form sculpted to fit the body; first presented at the Museum of Modern Art in 1948, and still popular today. The chairs are produced locally in Michigan by Herman Miller, just as the vintage chairs were. Available in side and armchair versions, today's molded plastic chairs are true to the originals and are fully authentic, with updated materials to meet environmental requirements. These pre-configured models in discontinued colors are available in limited quantities, while supplies last. See images shown and "Check Availability" link for details.

Friendly to the earth, the high-impact plastic shells are made of recyclable polypropylene and are dyed throughout so colors remain vibrant even after years of hard use. For extended comfort, the shell is connected to the base by rubber shock mounts. Glides are felted to protect hard-surface floors.

Notes:

These pre-configured chairs are available in limited quantities, while supplies last. Stacking/Ganging base chairs can stack up to 14 high.

Charles + Ray Eames

Designer: Charles + Ray Eames

With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look."

That look and their relationship with Herman Miller started with molded plywood chairs in the late 1940s and includes the world-renowned Eames lounge chair, now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

In addition to his professional career, Mark has been an industrial design professor at Pratt Institute for 14 years. In his graduate furniture design class, students are responsible for the ideation, design, and execution of an actual piece of furniture. The emphasis of the course is to encourage students to develop their own individual point of view.
