Eames® White Lounge Chair with Ottoman
Overview
New White Ash introduction, 2011. Original design by Charles & Ray Eames, 1956.
Made in the U.S.A. by Herman Miller.
New in Fall 2011, Herman Miller has introduced a fresh take on the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman - offering both with new light coloring. The set takes on a fresh, lighter style designed to complement the modern living space or office. Its wood shell is made from Ash and finished with a process to arrest the Ash in its natural, "freshly-cut" state. The resulting color is a creamy white that will not yellow over time. In addition, the metal components throughout the chair have been updated to a White finish that highlights the existing Polished Aluminum accents. The new version is upholstered in Pearl, Ivory or Almond MCL Leather. This natural, full grain leather will acquire wrinkles and creases and develop a rich patina with age, as intended by the Eames for this design. "The leather cushions do have built-in wrinkles to start with, but that is a clue that spells comfort to come, like the warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt." (Charles Eames).
The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are modern classics built to stand the test of time. The set includes a fixed-height chair and ottoman with a molded veneer seat and back shell, 6" thick foam cushions with leather upholstery, a white enameled base with polished aluminum trim, and a swivel mechanism. Cushions are individually upholstered and replaceable; back cushions are interchangeable and shock mounts are resilient natural rubber. Shells are made of a durable seven-ply wood veneer; the base and back braces are die-cast aluminum. All pieces are hand assembled, and are produced from wood harvested exclusively from sustainably managed forests.

A chair that looked like a potato chip. Another that resembled a "well-used first baseman's mitt." A folding screen that rippled...
With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look."
That look and their relationship with Herman Miller started with molded plywood chairs in the late 1940s and includes the world-renowned Eames lounge chair, now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
