Eames® Wire Chairs
Overview
Design by Charles & Ray Eames, 1951.
By Herman Miller.
In 1951, following the success of their molded plastic and plywood chairs, Charles and Ray Eames challenged themselves to design a reasonably priced, quality chair that was light yet strong. Their solution - the Eames Wire Chair - featured a sculpted look, comfort, and practicality. It was an immediate hit. Today's versions remain true to the original design, materials, and detailing.
The airy silhouette features a seat made of cross-woven wires and positioned on a bent-wire, welded base, also called the "Eiffel Tower" base. It is today part of the permanent collection in numerous museums, including San Francisco MOMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The chair was marketed by Herman Miller until 1967 and reintroduced in 2001.
The Wire Chair is available in three models: wire only; wire with a one-piece leather seat pad; or wire with a criss-cross two-piece leather pad (the "bikini"). The seat and base are chrome, and the leather pads are available in a range of colors. Standard glides feature a durable plastic bottom and can be ordered with felt bottoms to protect bare floors; both styles tilt slightly to help with leveling.
Select from three models, then select glide option and leather color.

Beautiful, sculptural chair. Perfect for a bad back, lots of support.
Designer: Charles + Ray Eames
A chair that looked like a potato chip. Another that resembled a "well-used first baseman's mitt." A folding screen that rippled...
With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look."
That look and their relationship with Herman Miller started with molded plywood chairs in the late 1940s and includes the world-renowned Eames lounge chair, now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
