Sam Hecht and Kim Colin formed design office Industrial Facility in London to explore the junction between industrial design and the world around us. Ippei Matsumoto joined the office soon after its formation and acts as Senior Designer. Industrial Facility considers and designs objects of varying purpose in relation to their spatial, cultural and performative landscapes. Their project areas include furniture, electronics, consumer products, cultural institutions, transportation and fashion.
Industrial Facility has received international recognition with numerous awards, exhibitions and publications. In 2007, the office received its third consecutive IF Hanover Gold. In 2008, Industrial Facility was voted Product Designer of the Year while also being nominated for the Prince Philip Designer's Prize. Works are included in the permanent collections of the MoMA, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; State Museum of Applied Arts, Munich; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; and the Museum Fur Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt.
The simple designs of Enchord are far from simple. Yet with minimalist design and big space ideas, the Desk offers a double decker of adaptable workspaces. The Mobile Cabinet holds papers and peripherals or just rolls away when not in use. Thoughtful design that adapts as you need it. Because workspaces should work with us, not against us.
Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
