Leaf™ Personal Light
Overview
The Leaf™ Personal Light uses innovative LED technology to bring the human touch to lighting. Designed by Yves Behar of fuseproject in San Francisco, Leaf lets the user manage lighting intensity, color, and on/off by simply touching the intuitive controls. Sleek, energy-efficient, and very adjustable, Leaf is designed for the office and living areas. It is a cool and compelling way to illuminate work or set a mood. Light meets local codes including Canada, New York City, and Chicago. To emit ambient lighting, fold upper blade close to lower blade. For wall wash light, pivot upper blade straight up. Available in Red.
Providing better, more effective products to connect individuals to their work is one of the key goals of "The Be Collection", whose products include the Leaf personal light. Herman Miller and noted designer Yves Behar spent more than three years of collaborative engineering and design development to create Leaf, a multi-purpose light suitable for home or office. Leaf's task-to-ambient capability combines LED (light emitting diode) technology, engineering, and sculptural beauty in what Behar calls, "a fusion of technology with humanity." Leaf can produce a spectrum of warm-to-cool light to meet a functional need, mood, or location with a simple touch control.
Leaf uses 20 LEDs for illumination - half are blue-white (cool) and half are yellow-white (warm). Touch to turn on/off. Slide a finger along a groove in the base to adjust intensity and achieve the desired blend of warm and cool light. When turned on, the light retains the previous color and intensity settings. Leaf allows up to 100,000 hours of use, eight times longer than conventional light sources. The blades of Leaf's elegant profile are thin and sculptural, giving the light an organic form. Its innovative heat-dissipating design keeps the light cool to the touch without a fan. The lower blade rotates 180° and pivots 27.5° forward and 23° backward. The upper blade pivots 210° to extend for direct lighting or to fold for subtle, ambient lighting.
Environmentally speaking, Leaf's sculptural form was created to minimize material use and mechanical complexities while maximizing light options. Overall, its LEDs consume between 8 and 9-watts of power, carry a 60,000-hour lifespan at full power, and cut energy use by 40% when compared with standard compact fluorescent lights. Leaf is also mercury and lead-free and RoHS compliant. And of course, Leaf was developed in strict accordance with Herman Miller's Design for Environment standards.
