Nelson™ Pedestal Side Table, Outdoor
Overview
Design by George Nelson, 1954.
Made in the U.S.A. by Herman Miller.
The slim, elegant lines and sculpted, tapered base of George Nelson's 1954 pedestal table look as good outdoors as in. Herman Miller has reinvigorated the series with materials that will stand up to the elements. This 17" diameter Outdoor Side Table can be used to accent chairs, chaises or seating groups in your modern outdoor spaces. By making the tops of stone and coating the bases with a durable powder-coat finish, it is now possible for you to use these beautiful and useful tables in outdoor arrangements. For weathering the elements, Herman Miller chose two powder-coat finishes for the bases and four durable stone finishes for the tops. Each type of stone comes from a North American quarry and, once extracted, 2 centimeter-thick slabs are cut to order with the tops given a knife edge derived from Nelson's original design.
Select White or Grey Georgia Marble, Wisconsin Black Marble or Quebec Black Granite stone table tops with 2 column/base finishes. Also offered in 28.5" diameter Outdoor Occasional Tables.
Notes:
Marble is locally sourced from quarries in the U.S. and Canada. All Herman Miller outdoor products carry a 3 year warranty.

Designer: George Nelson
When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps" — moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of."
Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as antihuman." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding.
Nelson did so as few are able, and, with the help of well-timed zaps, he helped define modern, humane design.
