Herman Miller

Herman Miller has been dedicated to design for more than 75 years. With a design legacy that began under the leadership of Gilbert Rohde and George Nelson in the 1930s and 40s, the company gained a worldwide following for its modern furniture collection by the early 1950s, with chairs, sofas and tables for home and office by designers like Charles & Ray Eames, Alexander Girard, George Nelson, and Isamu Noguchi. These icons of modern design developed products that still endure today. And, through continued innovation at the company and a new generation of designers and ideas, the products that Herman Miller makes today will endure for decades to come. Herman Miller works for a better world around you. They do this by designing furnishings that improve the human experience - from pioneering the way for ergonomic office seating and furniture to stewarding environmental leadership in its business and manufacturing processes, product material usage and product life cycles. Herman Miller's longstanding commitment to the world around us continues to drive design solutions for the modern home and workspace. The company continues to develop its designer relationships with names like Yves Behar, Jeff Weber and Studio 7 adding lighting, storage and office collections to its catalog of design classics.

Studio 7.5

When Burkhard Schmitz, Claudia Plikat, Nicolai Neubert, and Carola Zwick founded Studio 7.5 in Berlin, Germany, they were looking for freedom to work on projects that interested them, freedom from rules, roles, and titles.

And that's pretty much how they've operated ever since. "There are no bosses here," says the group, which also now includes Carola's brother Roland. Preferring to be heard as a single voice, they continue, "Everybody does everything. That's how we cultivate ideas and maintain our openness and curiosity."

When they began their partnership in 1992, right after the unification of Germany, office space in Berlin was extremely hard to find, so they thought about taking another, freer route: renting a 7.5 ton truck that required no special permit to drive. "We thought we could put our model shop in it, and drive from project site to project site," they explain. Thus, the name "Studio 7.5" was born. And although they didn't actually do it--they were able to locate office space after all--the name stuck.

When designing products for clients, Studio 7.5 moves quickly and smartly, too, progressing from the concept stage to the model shop, sometimes within a day or two, where they begin to create rough prototypes of the "thing," whatever it may be.

And like kids let loose with a pile of clay, this is their favorite activity.

"You really have to work in three dimensions when designing products," they say, "so we don't spend much time on fancy renderings. Computer drawings just don't give you the feel, the touch, the smell."

And when disagreements come up--as they certainly must in such a collaborative endeavor--who has the final say? "We discuss the issue and we always try to let the best idea win," they explain. "You'd think it would be complicated with four or five people, but if we have two people in an argument, the others can be referees who say, 'You know, I think she's right' or 'I think he's right.' So it actually makes it easier because you get more input."

One thing they all agree on: They love designing furniture. "What's so interesting about designing furniture as opposed to, say, a tape recorder, is that the designer who designs the recorder comes in last in the chain of command. It's just the beautification or 'packaging.' With furniture, it's far more holistic."

They find designing office chairs in particular to be the most rewarding. "We define not only how a chair looks but how it performs, even down to the characteristics of the tilt. We're very involved with its physical behavior, because beauty is not only what you see, it's also what you feel."

The joy the group derives from its work is obvious. As Burkhard, Nicolai, and Carola, who are also university professors, tell their students, "If you want to be rich, go work in a bank. If you want to be famous, go rob the bank. But if creating things is fun for you, become a designer and you'll be a king. It's the best profession in the world."

Especially when you have the freedom to do it your way.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good looking and comfortable Great looking work chairs that are comfortable and good for posture. The only dislike is that the color samples are printed on a card, and thus hard to translate into the color used on the physical material.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super stylish, super comfortable I was searching for an office chair for ages when I finally found the Setu. The classic mid-century style along with the modern comfort were exactly what I was looking for. The mesh seat and back will keep you cool and comfortable while being super durable. I chose the 4-star base without wheels since I have wooden floors in my office; I was not able to find this option with any other office chair. Thank you Herman Miller! A great value and amazing chair. I recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Modern, warm minimalistic style in a comfy, well-crafted design I've had my eye on the Setu Mulitipurpose Chair for quite some time and finally ordered one for my at-home office. I love its timeless, modern style -- very minimalistic in design with simple, clean lines. It is extremely well crafted with precision mechanisms for adjusting chair height, leaning back into a tilt, and rolling around efforlessly. Its low profile looks great in front of my desk -- really, a beautiful work of art. The mesh construction is sturdy and comfortable, and it is really a pleasure to sit at my computer for long hours now. I added the ribbon armrests -- and an upgrade of the base finish is advisable, as the alloy finish is surprisingly rough. On top of all that, YLiving's great customer service is fast and helpful ... along with no tax and free shipping. You won't be disappointed in this gem of an office chair!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple, honest, but incredible design For years I used a Herman Miller Aeron chair at work. I have issues with my back and this chair allowed me to work long hours without issue. My leather chair in my home office had seen better days (it was one of those bonded leather jobs that eventually start to crack and peel). I surveyed the market and found the SETU. I am a big fan of Herman Miller products, and when I saw this, I was ready to take the plunge without even trying it out. The SETU has most of the goodness of the Aeron with none of the complexity or cost. In fact this chair has much of the same feel as the Aeron. It has great lumbar support which is important to me. I have a bad back and just recently cracked a rib so this was a real godsend. My girlfriend suggested that I roll it out to the living room to wach TV until my back was better. It has made the experience much more tolerable. The only adjusttment on the SETU is a height adjustment, but I feel it is all I need. The recline is achieved by just laying back and letting the ribs (no pun intended) on the side compress. It works wonderfully well, and is very intuitive. One last thing is the custom options for HM products. I chose a a Java frame (dark brown) with Mango fabric (sort of an orange and brown weave). I was worried that it might be a little garrish, but it is classy and subdued. It works well with the cherry wood in my office. The SETU comes with a 12 year warranty. A great chair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Setu Multipurpose Chair Is perfect and so is YLiving! I work from home and have found that not just any chair will do when it comes to comfort and proper back support. The Setu is not only stylish, but it is just the ticket for long work days. The range of colors made it easy for me to select a chair that works with my loft style home. Working with customer service was a wonderful experience too. Overall great experience and product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful and Comfortable I've been sitting in a wooden professor's chair for years and it finally came time to invest in my back... I've always been fond of the Herman Miller office chairs and considered this, the Mirra and the Aeron. I think this one wins the aesthetics contest. All the bells and whistles on the Mirra and Aeron are unnecessary imho.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from comfortable chair this is a simple and elegant chair. the mesh keeps your backside cool by allowing it to breath through the mesh. the only setting to adjust is the seat height thus simple and easy to figure out. also the living hinge works great when you want to lean back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great looking This chair is beautifully designed. but to my surprise not as comfy as my Other chair by HM . And the mesh seating material is not very pleasant , if you are wearing shorts or completely naked. But it looks fantastic in my home office, and I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable and easy on the eyes and floor! This is an attractive, comfortable chair that includes caster options that work well for floors of softer material, like wood and softer stone. The chair is smooth rolling and I have not had any marking, scuffing, or scratching on the floor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent The Setu chair provides excellent back support and is versatile in terms of fitting into my room design. I received my chair ahead of the timeframe that was projected. I'm very happy with my order.
