Jeff Sokalski
Jeff Sokalski was one of those kids who was continually building something. Starting with tree houses and snow forts, he's always had a penchant for arranging space and the things within. While he was at Ryerson University in Toronto, he spent so much time in the school's workshop that a couple of his professors said to him, "Maybe you should think about becoming a furniture designer." It was probably the best advice he ever received.
Sokalski had grown up near another Canadian industrial designer, Douglas Ball. After deciding on his career path, "My goal was to work in Doug's studio," he recalls. "I knew they were very advanced in computer modeling, and I saw that as an important tool to master."
Sokalski uses his seasoned skills to create prototypes for pretty much every item he designs. Regardless of what that happens to be, he always tries to get to its basic, underlying need: What problem are we solving? What's the best solution for this?
He says he's learned to trust his initial instincts. "Usually, it's the idea I come up with right off the bat that turns out to be the best one," he says. "Of course, you always have to explore other things. But I've found that most of the time, your first idea ends up being the right direction to take. You just have to have the confidence to stick with it."
In addition to designing products for the world's top contract furniture manufacturers, Sokalski has worked with a number of museums, including the Museo De Los Niños, a children's museum in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he created 14 exhibits. One of his proudest accomplishments came early on when he renovated some old warehouses in Montreal's port district, turning them into livable loft spaces. "That was really fun," he says. "And it was great to be part of that whole community."
Jeff Sokalski Design is based in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
The Stoa® Modular Rail System kit includes everything you need for a highly functional desktop space. All components are tailored to meet a specific workspace need to keep desktop clear and focused. And at just 36" wide and 10" high (desk mounted), Stoa won't obstruct office views or take up surface space.
Featuring a use for everything: trays and drawer can also be stacked and used freestanding. The metal paper tray and drawer unit has a cutout for cord management. The tray/drawer top fits over a tray or drawer to create enclosed storage. An aluminum shelf keeps small items easily accessible and includes a cutout for a cord catch. The tack board/mirror features one felt tack board side and a glass mirror side that can also be used as a dry erase board. A 4" x 6" photo is secured between two thin acrylic pieces held together by four magnets and can be freestanding. The system includes two different decorative covers for the drawer/tray top. An acrylic overlay has corner magnets to secure photos or other memorabilia beneath it. And the felt overlay has a magnetic back and can also be used as a mouse pad.

Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
