Long and low, the Eames elliptical table sits comfortably in front of a long sofa or several chairs. It's a large, dramatic stage for fine art, fresh flowers, magazines, or special books on display in a living room, waiting room, or executive lounge.
The 89" long table provides lots of room to spread out or display a variety of items. Its tabletop is seven layers of Baltic birch plywood sandwiched between Black or White high-pressure laminate with a beveled edge on a 20° angle to reveal the plies. The wire rod base is a signature Eames look. Rods are zinc plated or powder coated Black or White.
A chair that looked like a potato chip. Another that resembled a "well-used first baseman's mitt." A folding screen that rippled...
With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look."
That look and their relationship with Herman Miller started with molded plywood chairs in the late 1940s and includes the world-renowned Eames lounge chair, now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Charles and Ray Eames considered many shapes for this large table introduced in 1951, but their final choice was elliptical. It reminds some of a surfboard. That's fitting, given that the Eameses enjoyed commanding views of the Pacific Ocean from their California home and studio.
Charles and Ray Eames spent many years experimenting with wire rods, work that yielded a number of breakthrough products in the 1950s--including the wire-rod base for this table, Eames wire-base tables, Eames wire chairs, and other products.

nice simple lines with function
The coffee table is exactly what we expected. The only minor items to be aware of is that the laminate picks up every little smudge very easily so you have to be careful of what you put on it unless you can constantly clean. Also, it would have been useful to have some small rubber stoppers under the legs to help adjust for uneveness in floors.

I've always dreamed of having an Eames Elliptical Table ever since I saw it in a case study house.
I love my Eames Elliptical Table, it fits perfectly in the tv room near my womb chair. It's more impressive than I though, really makes a statement, the size (length) of it. The surface is a bit delicate though, scratches easily. It also took a bit longer than I had expected but over all I love it. Thank you.
Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
