As Charles and Ray Eames saw it, designers just want to have "serious fun." This 68" high, undulating screen resulted from their play. It's a portable, foldable, enjoyable way to divide space, provide a backdrop, and add privacy. The screen was designed as a complement to other Eames molded plywood creations. It's also a stand-alone piece distinctive in all kinds of settings.
Featuring five-ply strength, the screen's maple inner plies are sandwiched between one of four veneer choices to resist warping and separation. A durable, woven polypropylene mesh connects the six plywood sections so it's easy to adjust the footprint. And, it easily folds for storage and portability.
A chair that looked like a potato chip. Another that resembled a "well-used first baseman's mitt." A folding screen that rippled...
With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look."
That look and their relationship with Herman Miller started with molded plywood chairs in the late 1940s and includes the world-renowned Eames lounge chair, now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Charles and Ray Eames noted that U-shaped cross sections of plywood from their early molding experiments were stable enough to stand alone. To make their screen, they joined the sections with canvas hinges and a synthetic adhesive developed during World War II. Today, a polypropylene mesh held securely by a new process ensures a longer life without compromising the integrity of the 1946 design.

Customer Reviews
The Eames screen by Herman Miller is beautiful.
We have always wanted the Eames screen in our home and finally came across the right opportunity with the purchase of a mid century home with its original character fully intact. The challenge was choosing the finish. Ebony won and it works beautifully.
We also decided to go with YLiving because we are tired of dealing with the big name suppliers. The staff at YLiving was courteous and attentive. The screen arrived damaged due to carrier mishandling and YLiving responded immediately and organized a quick turn around time for its replacement.
Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
