The Capelli stool is a lyrical, imaginative place to sit that resembles a Japanese puzzle box. The "fingers" of the stool's two identical halves interlock without fasteners to form a comfortable, stable, cantilevered structure. Composed of 11 alternating dark- and light-stained hardwood inner plies and light ash veneer. Easy shipping and storage. The stool unfolds, and the two halves can be stacked together. Offered in Light Ash wood.

Notes: For shipping and storage, the stool unfolds and the 2 halves stack together. No tools or fasteners are required.

Carol Catalano

Carol Catalano

When Carol Catalano was seven years old, she spent six weeks in bed with rheumatic fever. "To keep me from being bored, my dad gave me several books on drawing," she recalls, "and they opened a whole new world for me. That's when I decided I wanted to do something creative in my life."

Her creative interest found a focus when she entered the Rhode Island School of Design after high school and discovered industrial design. "After the first project, I knew I had found my life's work," she says.

Catalano says the training she received at RISD added a whole new dimension to her creativity. "They had a very hands-on approach, so I worked a lot with materials in the machine and wood shops." In fact, that hands-on training proved valuable when she was working on her Capelli stool. "One of the requirements for the International Furniture Design Competition in Asahikawa (Japan) was to build a full-size prototype," says Catalano, "which we did--in my garage."

The effort paid off: Her stool took a Silver Prize in the prestigious competition in 1999--one of only eight awards given and the only American design selected from over 700 entries from around the world.

Catalano has applied her creative talents to a wide variety of products since founding her business in 1987; current design projects range from "gig" bags for toting musical instruments to high-end audio speakers and other consumer electronics.

She finds learning about new industries one of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of her job. "I love giving artistic expression to things I've learned," she says, "and I'm always looking for ways to 'cross-pollinate.' Just the other day, for example, I was meeting with a thermoplastics supplier, and he was showing me the elastomer pellets in their raw state before they're melted down and injection molded. My immediate reaction was to think, how can we use these pellets in other applications?"

Catalano likes to push the current boundaries of her field and has made a commitment to include much more thinking about the end user's experience in all her designs. "It's much different now than when I first started out," she says. "It used to be about just creating a good design. Now the first thing I think about in any project is how I can simplify and enrich people's lives."

With the energy and enthusiasm she shows for her work, it's clear Catalano loves the career path she's chosen. In her time away from the office, she and her husband, an architect, enjoy windsurfing on a little island off the coast of Venezuela and spending family time with their twins.

YLiving Product Specifications

The inspiration for Carol Catalano's innovative design came from a very down-to-earth source. "Most of my work is fairly technical in nature, so I thought it would be fun to take on a project just for fun," Catalano says. "In pondering how to improve on the simple function of a stool I found myself observing the simple act of intertwining the fingers of my hands."

From there, Catalano developed several ideas for the stool by studying the ergonomics of comfortable sitting. Using cardboard and foam models, she and her staff at Catalano Design took the Capelli stool from concept to museum-quality prototype in less than two months. "From the beginning," Catalano says, "the form of the stool was a simple curve that we kept refining until it was comfortable and beautiful."

Notes: For shipping and storage, the stool unfolds and the 2 halves stack together. No tools or fasteners are required.

YLiving 5 Star Ratings Sculpture you can sit in

The Capelli stool is beautiful in it's simplicity. It is made of two interlocking bent pieces of wood that fit together like two hands with the fingers outstretched. I am pleased with the quality and find it also comfortable to sit in. Lovely in it's design it will surely become,if it isn't already, an Iconic piece of 21st century design.

3D Intelligent

Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.

Y-Tower

Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
