Alvar Aalto's first sketches for his vases were playfully called "Eskimo woman's leather trousers". Nature played a great role in Alvar Aalto's life and creativity. The undulating forms of the objects in the Aalto collection are like the Finnish landscape with its thousands of lakes — beautiful, alive and untamed. Glassblowers at the iittala factory still meticulously handcraft the legendary vases that are variations on one theme, fluid organic shapes that let the end user decide the use. Interpretations of the shape in new colors and materials add to the growing Alvar Aalto Collection and remain true to his original design idea.

Alvar Aalto
(1898-1976) Born in Kuortane, Finland. Thanks to his original style and unique talents, Alvar Aalto is one of the greatest names in modern architecture and design. During his career, he designed many buildings in different parts of the world: concert halls, libraries, hospitals, museums, and private homes, including the Villa Mairea. His furniture and lamps, often starting out as a part of the buildings he designed, are produced together with Finnish Artek.
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is recognized today as one of the great masters of modern architecture and Scandinavian design. Aalto created his own unique style of architecture and design inspired by man and nature. He believed that good design should be a part of everyday life. Therefore he created sensible products that enhance everyday living, like his iconic vases. Alvar Aalto would never say how his glass objects should be used, he wanted the user to decide.

Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
