Overview

Design by Oiva Toikka, 1964.
By Iittala.

The technical challenges of glassmaking have always inspired Oiva Toikka. His experiments with drop patterns carved in the glass mold gave rise to a new texture for glass in the 1960s. This resulted in the Kastehelmi (Finnish for dewdrop) pieces with a three-dimensional surface. The Kastehelmi range — playful and subtle, as so much of Toikka's work — has been one of his most popular designs. Originally in production until 1988, Iittala reintroduced the collection in 2010. The Kastehelmi Cake Stand is a recent addition to the collection.

Oiva Toikka

Designer: Oiva Toikka

Born in Karelia, 1931. Oiva Toikka is renowned for his glassware designs for Iittala, the Finnish design company. Originally trained in ceramics, he took up glass design later in life and is best known for his glass birds series. Toikka has also enjoyed success in a number of other creative outlets. He has worked as a stage and costume designer, generally working with Finnish director Lisbeth Landefort, although, in recent years he has also been associated with productions by the Finnish National Opera. Through the years, he has also contributed textile designs to the Marimekko collections.

Professor Oiva Toikka's surprising and bold glass art deviates from the streamlined aesthetic of Nordic design. He has won numerous awards in recognition of his consummate artistry, among them Lunning Prize, Pro Finlandia Medal, World Glass Now 85 Award, Kaj Franck Design Prize and the Prince Eugen Medal.

Iittala

Manufacturer: Iittala

iittala: Timeless design since 1881.

In the early years of modernism and functionalism, during the 1930s and 40s, pioneers like Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck led the development of the Iittala brand. Their belief was that objects should always be designed with a thought, essential and above all, available to all. It was their thinking that set the foundation for the Iittala design philosophy — to push the boundaries and to give people beauty and function.

Iittala strives to create icons that will last a lifetime. What started as a glass factory in Iittala, Finland, now celebrates generations of essential objects that are made to enrich people's everyday lives. More than just beautiful objects, Iittala creates timeless designs that will never be thrown away.
