Design by Joe Colombo, 1968. Made in Italy by Kartell.
Kartell's classic 4867 chair was the first industrial seat in the world created by a single injection mold and it offers multiple design solutions still to this day. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, the cylindrical leg is cut down the middle to enable side-by-side positioning with other chairs, and the grooves at the side of the seat allow for snug stacking. There is a nice little opening in the seat back that makes a handy grip for moving the chair around as well as for draining water should it get wet outside. Stacks 3 high.

Cesare "Joe" Colombo was born in Milan as the second of three brothers. He studied painting and sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, the academy of fine arts, in Milan and then architecture at Politecnico di Milano University.
In 1958, Joe and his younger brother Gianni took over the family business, which produced electric appliances. Using the factory as a playground, he started to experiment with new construction and production technologies. In 1962 Joe Colombo opened his own design office, which specialized in interior design and architecture projects for industry and retail stores. Concentrating on industrial design for the remainder of his short life, Joe Colombo believed that many problems could be solved by the use of new materials - first and foremost plastic. Joe Colombo was one of the most influential and representative designers of the modern era and his adventurous and futuristic character became his trademark. He received many awards for his designs and his works have been exhibited and included in the some of the most significant museum collections worldwide.
Kartell products, including the 4867 chair by Joe Colombo, are multifunctional and cross-sectional, easy to use and with undeniable visual appeal. Kartell products are immediately recognized worldwide for the excitement they create, their durable functionality and undisputed quality.
To simplify the recycling process, the various components of Kartell products can be easily separated and reduced to elements made of one single material. Moreover, the plastic parts of each product have a clearly printed universal Recycling Identification Mark.

Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
