Design by Carlo Bartoli, 1974. Made in Italy by Kartell.
Kartell's classic 4875 chair features a single body of seat and backrest. The cylindrical legs are molded separately and fastened snugly into sockets. The base of the seat has a double-perimeter structure: the internal structure and cross element firmly connect the four cylindrical legs and the three external side flaps strengthen the surface of the seat. The gentle concave curve of the backrest and the two lateral flaps satisfy ergonomic needs while making the chair even more solid.
Shown in the design collection of the National Arts Museum, Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
