As a leader of the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer used the technological advances of his day in the service of better living. His 1928 Cesca Chair married traditional craftsmanship to industrial materials and methods. The design combines the modern-age aesthetic of a cantilevered tubular steel frame with a seat and back made of user-friendly wood and caning option or an upholstered option.
The quintessential office and dining chair, the Cesca Chair is at home in virtually any environment. The seat, back and tubular frame are meticulously crafted to the designer's original specifications. And each chair is stamped with the designer's signature. Select the Wooden Cesca Chair or Upholstered Cesca Chair with or without arms. Customize with a variety of wood finishes or upholstered fabrics.
Notes:
The Cesca Chair is Greenguard certified. The KnollStudio logo and signature of Marcel Breuer are stamped into the base of the chair. Opaque plastic snap-in glides are shipped with each chair for optional in-field insertion.

Protégé of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer embodied many of the School's distinctive concepts and was and one of the School's most famous students. He returned shortly thereafter to teach carpentry from 1925 to 1928, and during this time designed his tubular-steel furniture collection: functional, simple and distinctly modern. His attention drifted towards architecture, and after practicing privately, he worked as a professor at Harvard's School of Design under Gropius. Breuer was also honored as the first architect to be the sole artist of an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Wassily Chair was named after his Bauhaus roommate Wassily Kandinsky, the Cesca after his daughter Francesca.
