Comfort, value, and style!

By: Cruz, Homeowner (Sacramento, CA)

I purchased 4 spark chairs in the fun citron color, and I absolutely love them. With their molded shape, they are surprisingly comfortable for a chair with no padding. The chairs arrived very carefully stacked and packaged, and were in perfect condition. The spark side chairs look great on my new patio, and I look forward to many years of use outdoors with these chairs.

Spark Chairs Bring Balcony to Life

By: Gomez G., Renter (Miami Beach)

Super comfortable, great lines, beautiful intense color (Blue) and obviously made to last - I could not be happier.

Good chair but could be more comfortable

By: Rural J., Homeowner (North Carolina)

The chair is sturdy, reasonably comfortable, and easy to clean. I think it would be more comfortable if the backrest had a little more flex in it, similar to the Bellini chair. Sometimes when I lean back the low backrest hits my spine uncomfortably. I removed 1 star from my rating for this. For reference, I'm 5'8" tall. The seat height is listed at 18", but that's at the front corners. It's about 17.5" at the front center, and slopes down to a height of about 15.5" at the back center. This sounds a little low, but when sitting in the chair I'm happy with the height and slope of the seat. The bottom of the feet are plastic, the same material as the rest of the chair. I guess this is what the description means by "integral glides". I haven't noticed any damage to my hardwood floor. The shipping from YLiving was very fast. I ordered on a Wednesday morning and received it Friday morning. It only had to go from Virginia to North Carolina, though, so that may have helped.

Beautiful, simple and functional.

By: beatnick71, Homeowner (Brooklyn, NY)

The red Spark chairs have quickly become the focal point of my terrace. Versatile and light yet sturdily constructed, the matte chairs do not seem to scratch easily, unlike chairs with a glossy coat, and they are also easy to clean. They arrived within days of my putting in my order and have been a joy to sit in since I got them.

Colorful, comfortable, and durable. Shipping was so-so.

By: Matt, Designer (Seattle, WA)

We love these. They arrived just over a week after ordering them (awesome) though could have been packed a little better (lots of peanuts, little to stop the chairs from rubbing against each other), but no significant damage. Customer service was also super responsive when I had questions about availability and delivery time. 5 star chairs, 5 star service, 3 star shipping.

Just what I needed

By: Teets, Designer (Boston)

Comfortable and functional. I bought the light gray version of the chairs and they're the perfect complement to the black kitchen table and red couch in my studio apartment. Only problem has been with YLiving, who didn't inform me that four of my chairs were on back order (arrival date: uncertain) and shipped one of the chairs with a big red mark across the back. Customer service has been good, though, and they're accepting a return on the defective chair.

Great Chair

By: School Of Rock, Architect (Tenafly, NJ)

We used several of these Spark Stacking Chairs for our School of Rock in New Jersey and plan to use them in all of our centers across the country. Great chair for a great value. Especially like the black & red colors. Shipping was timely and the customer service at YLiving & YLighting is superb.

Don Chadwick

Designer: Don Chadwick

Don Chadwick isn't one of those designers who say that their "real" studio is in their mind. Chadwick's real studio is in Santa Monica, thank you, and anyway, he prefers to call it "an experimental lab."

"We're set up to get dirty and take chances," he says.

His lab apparatus includes saws and grinders, lathes and drill presses and vises--and not one computer-numerically-controlled anything. Computer technology, Chadwick allows, is great for some things, but when he hears someone suggest that a new chair could have just as effectively been designed by computer, he says, politely, "You're out of your mind!"

"The only way to be sure a chair is comfortable is to actually sit in it and make changes along the way," Chadwick says. "A computer can't deal with the subtleties of chair design. Good chairs are too complex."

Too complex? Yes, and not just for computers.

"Most industrial designers don't take furniture design seriously," he says. "They're not trained to get into that kind of detail. It's too personal, too much like surgery. And besides, you have to be in love with this kind of work."

Chadwick's love for furniture design goes back to his childhood, when his cabinetmaker grandfather taught him how to use the tools of the trade--hand tools that required skill, precision, and patience. Later, unlike the other industrial design students at UCLA in the mid-1950s, he focused on furniture. And after hearing a Charles and Ray Eames lecture there, Chadwick was convinced: Furniture offered designers, even industrial designers, the chance to use materials in new, innovative ways--and to make a "real difference" in people's lives.

He attributes at least some of this optimism to the "LA recklessness" he's experienced as a lifelong resident of Southern California. "There's less fear of failure out here, so people are more apt to take risks. It's fertile ground for innovation."

For over two decades now, Chadwick has had a partner in recklessness. "Herman Miller isn't afraid to take chances on new ideas. That's why the company's been successful for so long, and that's one reason why it's challenging to work for them."

The Santa Monica-Zeeland connection continues, the experimental lab whirling with the sounds of belt sanders and power saws. That, after all, is what real design studios do.
