Design by Sam Hecht/Industrial Facility, 2010.
Made in Italy by Mattiazzi.
Taking its cue from the intricacy of tree branches, the Branca Chair has elements that turn, twist, meet, and branch off. Designer Sam Hecht says the branches of a tree provided "the critical analogy" for the Branca Chair.
This is a chair whose ingredients are a combination of highly complex parts produced with sophisticated machinery, alongside simple traditional shaping and finishing by hand. Branca's back legs support the seamless joints of the armrest, seat, and back, and are made from a single piece of wood produced robotically. This is made possible with CNC machinery, most notably Mattiazzi's eight Axis Robot. Components are crafted, finished and hand-inspected through every step of manufacturing to ensure that the beauty of the wood shows through its perfectly constructed form.

Mattiazzi has a history of design, craft, industrial processes, and sustainable practices. Based in Udine, Italy, the company has over 30 years of experience in crafting wood, by hand and with advanced machinery. Mattiazzi products balance beauty and comfort, communicating to the senses the warmth and familiarity of solid wood.
Mattiazzi has been on the cutting edge of woodworking and furniture design since 1978, when brothers Nevio and Fabiano Mattiazzi founded the company. Since then, the company has developed a network of wood shops in their region that are diverse enough to support any manufacturing process the brand may need. Shops specialize in all aspects of woodcraft - from milling to lacquering. Their highly specialized craftsmen operate the most sophisticated machinery available to the wood industry. Specialized milling machines, for example, allow wood to take the complex shapes associated with injection-molded plastic. Operating such a machine is an art and Mattiazzi has pioneered and perfected the modern craft of mechanized manufacturing. All products are crafted, finished and hand-inspected through every step of manufacturing and assembly to produce wood furniture of impeccable quality and flawless design.View other products from Mattiazzi
