 Modern Stools: When you need a boost A few things to consider while shopping for modern stools: Height. Modern stools are largely available in 2 heights: counter height and bar height. You want about 8-12 inches between the bottom edge of the counter surface and the top of your legs. Most countertops are 36 inches off the floor; therefore a standard seat height of a corresponding modern stool is about 24-26 inches. On the other hand, bar countertops usually measure 40 inches from the floor and hence most modern bar stools are 29-31 inches in height. For high bars, you can find extra-tall modern stools as high as 34-35 inches. Quantity. 30 inches from the center of one seat to the next is a good general rule for how far apart stools should be placed.
