Design by Ron Rezek.
By The Modern Fan Company.

Redefining their classic Ball fan, the Modern Fan Company has added a hugger configuration that is great for use in low-ceiling environments. The teardrop shape makes a graceful transition from the fan to the ceiling, conveying a sense of fluidity to the space while housing all the components required for exceeding the EPA's Energy Star guidelines for air movement efficiency (rating applies to fan only).

The optional light kit provides ambient lighting in your choice of halogen or compact fluorescent lamping. Light kits will add 1" to overall height of the fan. The motor is a high power silicon steel design with 16 poles. These motors are designed for long life and silent running, and are controlled by dual capacitors. The fan speed and the light can be operated by one of several control options.
Note: Any control ordered with a fan that has been configured with an energy-saving CFL will be supplied in a non-dimming version.

Product Features:

  • Airflow measured in cubic feet per minute at high speed (CFM) = 5986.55
  • Watts at high speed = 72.4
  • Airflow efficiency at high speed (CFM/Watts) = 82.69
  • Die-cast aluminum body in a gloss white or hand brushed aluminum finish
  • The blades are a plywood laminate with a gloss white coating or metallic aluminum paint and are available with 42" or 52" blade span.
  • Silent running motor

Modern Fan Ceiling Fan Buyers' Guide + FAQs

How low can the fan go and still meet my local code?

Code requires that the fan blades be at least seven feet off the floor. The code looks to the blade height and not the bottom of the fan body. However, for low ceiling installations, we recommend the Modern Fan Co. Cirrus Hugger as it looks more proportional when installed. This is the most popular fan sold in New York City, for instance, due to the high number of low- ceiling apartments there. For low ceilings, we recommend the Cirrus Hugger over the Cirrus as it is better balanced visually.

What size fan blades should I use?

In nearly all cases, the 50-inch to 56-inch blade spans are the most appropriate selections. The 42-inch or 46-inch blade spans should be reserved for smaller rooms or narrow spaces (10-foot-by-10-foot and smaller) or when airflow to the area above the blades is blocked or restricted by architectural elements (beams, walls, cabinetry, etc.). Occasionally, two 42-inch fans may be a desirable alternative to one 52-inch fan. The Altus and Cirrus models are also available with a 36-inch blade span for exceptionally small or narrow spaces.

How far down should I drop the fan?

We recommend that you drop the fan as far down as your aesthetics will allow in order to create the most air circulation.

What kind of light should I expect from the light kits? Will they light an entire room?

In general, the light produced by the light kits will not be sufficient for an entire room's illumination with the exception of the Halo fan. The light kits that use MR16 bulbs will not produce much task lighting at all and are more decorative in nature. The light kits which use incandescent bulbs will illuminate the area directly below and around the fan. The Halo has great lumen output and can easily light up an entire room since this body is very large and the glass is a great light diffuser. However, we do not recommend this fan in small rooms as the size of the fan tends to be visually overpowering.

Can I use ceiling fans outdoors?

All Modern Fan models are rated and marked as "Suitable for Damp Location." While you can expect years of trouble-free performance from these fans when installed in humid or coastal environments, the degree to which the appearance of a fan may be impacted by the environment will vary widely. A fan's specific finishing process as well as the intensity and nature of exposure that it will encounter in a given application will directly affect the longevity of its finish and appearance. A damp rating does not address specific finish durability, nor does it assure that corrosion will not occur in exposed locations. We encourage you to closely consider these factors when selecting fans for use in damp locations. A diligent maintenance program, initiated immediately after product installation at a frequency necessary to avoid salt deposits on the fan surface(s) for prolonged periods of time, is the best defense against corrosion and oxidation.

The brushed aluminum and galvanized finishes will typically outlast all others in our collection. These surfaces will not rust or peel, however, they will weather as a result of oxidation and exposure to salt or other corrosive conditions. The bright nickel and matte nickel finishes are also well-suited for exposure to reasonable conditions, but may show signs of weathering more quickly and visibly. The coated finishes (gloss white, titanium, textured nickel, gloss nickel) may be subject to peeling over time when exposed to sun, salt and/or other environmental conditions.

An additional consideration is blade construction. Over time, plywood is subject to warping and/or delamination. While fan blades are easily replaceable when necessary, our injection molded plastic blades supplied with the Velo, Velo Hugger and Pensi fans will generally outlast the plywood blades supplied with all other models in our catalog.

Modern Fans are not rated, nor intended for use in applications classified as Wet Location.

Can I use the fan on a sloped ceiling?

We offer sloped ceiling canopies for all Modern Fan Co. fans. However, with respect to the Stratos, the sloped ceiling installation is more difficult and should be performed by a licensed electrician using the factory installed (at purchase) sloped ceiling adaptor.

Which lighting control should I use?

While the choices in lighting controls seem overwhelming, the decision shouldn't be:

MF001: This is the basic three-speed control used to change speed on a fan without a light. It mounts on a wall switch box and includes a Decora-style wall plate.

MF002: This is the basic three-speed control (MF001) but with the ability to control a light (three levels of light intensity). This control requires two circuits from the wall box to the ceiling junction box (one circuit for the fan motor and one circuit for the fan light).

MF004 (MF011 for Ball/Whirlybird): If you do not have two circuits leading to your fan installation, then use this control. It uses the two wires that come from the junction box to the wall box to control the fan motor and it uses a radio transmitter (similar to a garage opener) to control the light on the fan.

MF009: This is the same as the MF001 but is designed to control three-to-five fans simultaneously.

MF003 (MF010 for Ball/Whirlybird): This is a handheld remote control unit that allows you to control both the fan and the light. The remote control has a LCD screen which shows the current setting. With the five buttons you can select one of the three fans speeds, stop, or light intensity. A signal receiving unit is placed into the fan canopy. A wall hanger is included with the remote.

Why is my fan sometimes on when I come home?

If your fan is mysteriously on when you come home from work, you are using one of the radio controllers. There are dip switches up in the fan body that change the frequency that the controller uses. Switch the frequency and your problem should go away.

Why does my fan wobble?

Fan wobble is an inherent problem with fans due to minute variation in the fan blade weight distribution. Modern Fan Company's fan blades are specified to be within one gram weight difference to avoid wobble. However, some wobble tends to be inevitable due to variance in installation location, airflow and other minutiae. Included in every fan is a small tool to help balance the fan and thereby reduce wobble: Attach the device to the end of each fan blade and turn the fan on. After trying this tool on each blade, identify the blade which, when the tool is attached, produces the least wobble. Then, move the tool from the outside of that blade towards the center in half-inch increments until you find the "sweet spot" (the location that produces the least wobble). In most cases, this will solve your problem. Modern Fan Company does not consider wobble to be a defect, and accordingly will not repair or replace installed fans due to wobble. YLighting accepts returns on fans but only if the fan has not been installed. So if a little wobble disturbs you, we discourage you from investing in a fan of any kind.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought 7 fans, the Cirrus is my favorite I went for ceiling fans over air conditioning for many reasons, and my electrician recommended Moden Fans. I bought these models: Ball, Cirrus and Lapa and have the Cirrus installed with a light over my range (on an island in the kitchen). It looks great, works really well, and the light is a godsend. I have remote controls for 4 of the fans, which is mounted on the wall by the light switch, and I love them. The other 3 fans have wall switches. The fans all look well made, very modern, which fits my decor and they move the air extremely well. Who needs air conditioning anyway? These were much less expensive and they get the job done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best Option for Our Needs We have looked far and wide for a fan that met our aesthetic needs, along with the height restrictions our ceiling creates. The ball hugger (amazing name) really appeared to be and is the fan for us. We did the 42 inch blades and I think we could have gotten by with the 52 - my husband felt the room was too small. The 42 does really move the air though and looks just fine with the base (I saw other people who mentioned the fan look odd with the smaller blades and I do not agree). We are very happy with the product and the service - looks very high-end and came timely and no damage. Best deal I could find on this fan, too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This fan seems very efficient and has a great modern look. We opened the box but did not unpackage all the parts. The fan seems to be of high quality and the design is great. Unfortunately, with living in an 84 year old home with medium height ceilings, we were unable to install the fan and have to return it. We're opting to use floor fans instead. Despite this, we would recommend Y lighting to someone who is looking for a modern ceiling fan for the good product and efficient customer service. Hopefully Y lighting will have some light fixtures we can order for our home. We gave the fan four stars because we did not get a chance to see it operating since we did not install it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A new Ball Hugger blows all your problems away No more hot lonely nights! Everyone needs a Ball Hugger. Directions are hard to understand, but you can't have it all for $300, just have patience and prepare for bliss. I have a couple of Balls already but something was missing until I added the Hugger model. Why didn't they think of this before? The Ball Hugger has really taken the stress of my two Ball models, allowing complete air circulation. Ironic? Maybe. But it's not all about blowing hot air. This fan really brightens your room with its powerful CFL. Buy a Ball Hugger, they really took Balls to another level. It's just the right touch I needed in my bedroom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clean design, easy installation. We spent an unhealthy amount of time searching for a fan that didn't look like it came straight from the parlor of a southern debutante circa 1872. Modern Fan Company saved the day. Their selection gave us several modern (not space-age!) models to choose from when looking for a fan that that would fit the low ceilings of our home. The build-quality is superior and installation was straightforward, even for a skills-impaired fella such as myself. Ylighting was also great to deal with. A shipping error in fan blade style was remedied within days, much to my satisfaction. Overall, great product and great service - I'll definitely be dealing with both companies again in the near future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Funny name, great products We love this fan and wonder how we did without it. Quiet well balanced easy to install by one person thanks to the support cable. We will definitely be buying another one of these within the year for our other room. We bought the two wire control and installation was straight forward. My only gripe about it was that the threading on the mounting plate attached to the ceiling wasn't so good. That coupled with the angle the screwdriver had to turn the screw at you are liable to strip the screw before it goes in all the way. My light kit was also missing three screws to the bezel the glass twists into.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quiet fan with clean modern design. We bought two 42" fans with halogen lights in white and aluminum finishes. The fan operation is very quiet. The light quality is not the best; it's very white and creates glare without creating much illumination for the room. I also wish it were round to compete the "ball" shape, instead of like a bullet tip. We ended up buying additional 52" blades for the aluminum fan because the proportion seemed really off with the shorter blades. It was not so noticeable on the white fan in a white room so we left that one with the 42" blades. All-in-all, we are happy with our purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We are very pleased with this ceiling fan. Six years ago we moved from a large Victorian house in which I had installed several ceiling fans, to an apartment and a cooperative retirement community. Our apartment has very good air conditioning and so–so heating, and we decided that we might improve the situation with a good ceiling fan. We wanted something close to the ceiling, unobtrusive, and quiet. We purchased a Ball Hugger, made by the Modern Fan Company. Even with the discounted price at Y Lighting this is not a cheap fan, but it is well worth the money. Compared to the traditional, older model fans we have used in the past, this is a great improvement. On low speed is very quiet, and even at higher speeds what we mostly hear is the rushing of air.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super cute, works as promised. We got the 42" gloss white Ball Hugger for my sons' bedroom. It looks really great: the 42" is nice, proportionally, for their small room, and the smaller blade size makes for cuter proportions in terms of the fan's overall look (good for a youth room). I don't know if it's a function of the fan's motor, or just because it's such a small space (the room is about 10x12'), but it creates some really strong wind!! We got the compact fluorescent bulb to save energy. Not terribly bright but passable as the main light source in the small room.
