Designer Maarten Baas's unique design approach involves burning pieces of furniture and then preserving the charred remains with a clear epoxy coating. For the Smoke Chandelier, the traditional fixture is left with three functional arms, each of which accepts a 40W max candelabra base incandescent bulb (not included).
Each piece will differ slightly, as they share the unfamiliar and untamed finish that is categorized by fire.

Designer: Maarten Baas
Born in Arnsberg, Germany, 1978 but moved to the Netherlands in 1979 where he grew up. In 2002 Baas graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven with two designs including a series of charred furniture, popularly known as the Smoke series and an ingenious sundial, displaying the hours in shadow. His works were nominated for the René Smeets and Melkweg design awards.
Three of Baas' Smoke works have been reproduced by avant-garde Dutch design firm, Moooi. Thanks to the international exposure of successful exhibitions in Milan, London, and Paris, the Smoke series is considered by museums, critics, collectors and the design-informed public an iconic collection of contemporary design.
Maarten Baas lives and works in Waalre, near Eindhoven, in the Southern region of the Netherlands. It is there where he produces his handmade furniture and is continually developing new concepts and designs.
