Design by House Industries. Made in the U.S.A. by Playsam.
Introduced as part of the Eames Century Modern project, this clever set of alphabet blocks is also a model of the landmark Eames House and Studio. The blocks form an educational puzzle image of this monument to American mid-century design and architecture while also showcasing letters, numerals and symbols from the Eames Century Modern collection.
Includes 36 Alphabet Blocks (20 for the house, 16 for the studio) made from replenishable Michigan-grown, kiln-dried basswood and printed with non-toxic, lead-free, child-safe inks.
House Industries is a unique oasis of typography and design that stands out in a cultural continuum of endless electronic effluvia. From their sketchpads, pencils, pens, brushes and bezier curves flow their passion for authenticity and integrity. House Industries fonts scream from billboards, wish happy whatever from tens of thousands of greeting cards, serve as the basis for consumer product logos and add elements of style to a wide range of mainstream media. House artists have mastered a large cross-section of design disciplines, transcending graphic conventions and reaching out to a broad audience. What ultimately shines in the House Industries oeuvre is what always conquers mediocrity: a genuine love for their subject matter.
Sitting high atop the Pacific Palisades overlooking Santa Monica and the Pacific Ocean, the original Eames House was built in 1949 as No. 8 in the series of Case Study Houses and is still recognized for its revolutionary use of space and materials. Charles and Ray Eames moved into the house in 1950 and it was continuously occupied until Ray's death in 1988. The House and Studio is now managed by the Eames Foundation, which oversees its preservation and administers tours to foundation members.
Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.
Y-Tower
Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
