Knoll

Knoll was founded in 1938 by Hans and Florence Knoll who sought to create new types of furniture and environments for the home and workplace. Their approach was to join craftsmanship with technology through the use of design and to create beautiful home furnishings that stood the test of time visually, functionally and practically. The pair sought out designers willing to change the landscape of modern design. With pioneering modernists like Eero Saarinen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Harry Bertoia, and Richard Schultz they built a brand that today contains many of the hallmarks of modern design.

Knoll enjoys brand recognition throughout the world for its modern classics as well as groundbreaking new products formulated under new designer partnerships. Few companies can match the array of Knoll products, which combine a modernist aesthetic with residential appeal. This point of view nurtured by Florence Knoll, has become the trademark of Knoll design. The Knoll name offers a rich design history - a legacy of iconic designers and inventive new collaborations. Their focus on quality and responsible manufacturing means that each piece transcends multiple generations in both use and appeal.

Richard Schultz

Richard Schultz joined Knoll Associates in 1951 to work with Harry Bertoia, after studying at Iowa State University and the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Schultz's work with Knoll took a serendipitous turn when Florence Knoll asked him to design durable, attractive outdoor furniture for her Florida home. The result was the "Leisure Collection" (now sold as the "1966 Collection") which became an instant classic. In addition to his work for Knoll, he designed an office system for Stow/Davis. He also taught basic design at the Philadelphia College of Art and had a one-man show of his sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

In 1992, Richard Schultz began his own furniture manufacturing and design company, where he and his son, Peter, have built an impressive line of outdoor furniture collections including Topiary, Swell, and Mateo. In 2012, Knoll and Richard Schultz reunited to distribute these widely acclaimed and sought after collections to the residential market.
