Designer: Richard Schultz
Richard Schultz joined Knoll Associates in 1951 to work with Harry Bertoia, after studying at Iowa State University and the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Schultz's work with Knoll took a serendipitous turn when Florence Knoll asked him to design durable, attractive outdoor furniture for her Florida home. The result was the "Leisure Collection" (now sold as the "1966 Collection") which became an instant classic. In addition to his work for Knoll, he designed an office system for Stow/Davis. He also taught basic design at the Philadelphia College of Art and had a one-man show of his sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
In 1992, Richard Schultz began his own furniture manufacturing and design company, where he and his son, Peter, have built an impressive line of outdoor furniture collections including Topiary, Swell, and Mateo. In 2012, Knoll and Richard Schultz reunited to distribute these widely acclaimed and sought after collections to the residential market.

The rich history of Richard Schultz began with Richard Schultz's long involvement in modern furniture design, sculpture and art. He worked with Harry Bertoia during the development of Bertoia's iconic collection of wire chairs for Knoll. Schultz later designed the Petal Collection to accompany the Bertoia's Diamond Chair. Some years later, Florence Knoll specifically asked Schultz to create a collection of furniture that could withstand the outdoors. The result was the "Leisure Collection" (now sold as the "1966 Collection") which became an instant classic.
In 1992, Richard Schultz began his own furniture manufacturing and design company. The entire collection, featuring outdoor chairs, lounges, tables and accessories, relates to the designer's deep interest in sculptural form and its relation to nature and man. Outdoor furniture must be comfortable and durable for use in outdoor and garden settings. And, balanced with that, designs are kept either complementary or supplementary to their natural surroundings, providing an aesthetic of luxuriant creativity, guided by materials and form.
For the past 20 years, Schultz and his son, Peter, have been able to build an impressive line of outdoor furniture collections including Topiary, Swell, and Mateo. In 2012, Knoll and Richard Schultz reunited to distribute these widely acclaimed and sought after collections to the residential market.
