Design by Richard Schultz.
With the growth of outdoor rooms and an appreciation for furnishing the exterior environment has come a need for large, luxurious sofa seating to furnish outdoor living rooms. The Swell Seating Collection was created to fit this need. It is the only large-scale outdoor modular sling seating available, leading the market in innovation and design. The Swell Club Chair is based on the generous proportions used in other classic seating and will fit into a 30" cube. This series uses the same Mesh seating options as the 1966 Collection®. However, Mesh colors on Swell will run perpendicular to the 1966 Collection®. See image at right for illustrative detail of this feature.
The Swell® Collection Club Chair can be customized with strap, mesh seating and frame color options. Features vinyl straps (select from 6 colors) with woven polyester mesh seating (select from 10 colors). The cast and extruded aluminum frame is finished in a weather resistant polyester powder coat (select from 13 colors). Optional custom covers and Swell accent pillows are available and sold separately.
Material(s): Cast and extruded aluminum frame with weather resistant polyester powder coat, clear butyrate plastic glides, woven vinyl coated polyester mesh seating, pure vinyl straps, Teflon sewing thread, stainless steel supports and connectors
Designer: Richard Schultz
Richard Schultz joined Knoll Associates in 1951 to work with Harry Bertoia, after studying at Iowa State University and the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Schultz's work with Knoll took a serendipitous turn when Florence Knoll asked him to design durable, attractive outdoor furniture for her Florida home. The result was the "Leisure Collection" (now sold as the "1966 Collection") which became an instant classic. In addition to his work for Knoll, he designed an office system for Stow/Davis. He also taught basic design at the Philadelphia College of Art and had a one-man show of his sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
In 1992, Richard Schultz began his own furniture manufacturing and design company, where he and his son, Peter, have built an impressive line of outdoor furniture collections including Topiary, Swell, and Mateo. In 2012, Knoll and Richard Schultz reunited to distribute these widely acclaimed and sought after collections to the residential market.View other products by Richard Schultz

The rich history of Richard Schultz began with Richard Schultz's long involvement in modern furniture design, sculpture and art. He worked with Harry Bertoia during the development of Bertoia's iconic collection of wire chairs for Knoll. Schultz later designed the Petal Collection to accompany the Bertoia's Diamond Chair. Some years later, Florence Knoll specifically asked Schultz to create a collection of furniture that could withstand the outdoors. The result was the "Leisure Collection" (now sold as the "1966 Collection") which became an instant classic.
In 1992, Richard Schultz began his own furniture manufacturing and design company. The entire collection, featuring outdoor chairs, lounges, tables and accessories, relates to the designer's deep interest in sculptural form and its relation to nature and man. Outdoor furniture must be comfortable and durable for use in outdoor and garden settings. And, balanced with that, designs are kept either complementary or supplementary to their natural surroundings, providing an aesthetic of luxuriant creativity, guided by materials and form.
For the past 20 years, Schultz and his son, Peter, have been able to build an impressive line of outdoor furniture collections including Topiary, Swell, and Mateo. In 2012, Knoll and Richard Schultz reunited to distribute these widely acclaimed and sought after collections to the residential market.View other products from Richard Schultz
