Skram: Sustainable, Authentic + Extraordinary

Based in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, Skram has for decades been a hub of furniture manufacturing. Skram’s successful rise is the result of a model of manufacturing that achieves sustainable growth through the creation of objects of enduring value and sound design.Skram’s approach to manufacturing is rooted in the belief that the objects produced by a society are a reflection of the character and priorities of that society. The company seeks to promote an interpretation of sustainability that directly impacts not only what is produced, but also the mode of production. Thus, Skram furniture brings the artisan back to the factory, producing objects on a scale that permits the fulfillment of volume orders without sacrificing the attention to detail expected by its customers.

Skram emphasizes sustainable practices, authentic materials, and extraordinary workmanship. Skilled craftsmen utilize a mix of traditional techniques and cutting-edge fabrication processes to create products that meet the highest standards of precision and durability. With expertise in a wide range of materials--including timber, hardwood veneer, assorted metals, leather, and stone--the company’s products are uniquely suited to diverse settings from residential to commercial and hospitality.

Skram strives to minimize waste and the use of noxious chemicals, and to use responsibly harvested materials. As part of its ongoing program to mitigate the harmful effects associated with manufacturing, Skram uses non-toxic adhesives and industrial-strength, low-VOC, water-based polyurethane finishes. Additionally, the company is committed to broadening it’s offering of certified timber options as they become available in consistent quantity and quality. Locally harvested materials also constitute an important source of timber for Skram. In 2008, the company transitioned to a LEED contributing, formaldehyde-free, 100% pre-consumer recycled content substrate in veneered products. Skram is a member of American Forests, the Rainforest Alliance, and the Sustainable Furnishings Council.
