Design by Tom Dixon, 2006.

Introduced to the U.S. market in 2007, this series of lights was inspired by the sculptural simplicity of brass cooking pots and traditional water vessels in India. The Beat Light - Wide is spun and hand-beaten by renowned skilled craftsmen of Moradabad in Northern India.

The design and inception of the Beat Lights originated from a field trip to India taken by Tom Dixon and his Royal College students. Their mission was to investigate how design affects the livelihood of different cultures and peoples. They spent days with local tinkers, brass beaters and marble workers. It was here that they discovered a method of metal manufacturing that appealed because of its heritage and unique aesthetic. The Beat Light - Wide employs these traditional techniques in its production.

Includes black metal 4.9" diameter ceiling canopy.

In 2004 Proventus, the Swedish-based private investment company, teamed up with Tom Dixon to establish Design Research, a design and product development holding company. Tom Dixon launches new collections annually at the Milan international furniture fair and product is sold across 61 countries.

In September 2012 Tom Dixon's sister-brand, Eclectic by Tom Dixon, was established, launching accessories collections annually at Maison et Objet in Paris.

Tom Dixon

Born in Tunisia, Tom Dixon moved to England in 1963. He dropped out of Chelsea School of Art to play bass in the band 'Funkapolitan' before teaching himself welding and going on to produce furniture.

Tom rose to prominence in the mid 1980's as "the talented untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture". He set up 'Space' as a creative think-tank and shop front for himself and other young designers. By the late 1980's, he was working for the Italian giant Cappellini for whom he designed the Iconic 'S' chair. In the 1990's, he became a household name and Jack, his polypropolene "sitting, stacking, lighting thing" designed for his own company 'Eurolounge' was a symbol of the age.

Tom was appointed head of design by Habitat in 1998 and later became Creative Director until 2008. In 2000, his work was recognized by the award of an OBE by Her Majesty The Queen. Tom's works have been acquired by the world's most famous museums and are now in permanent collections across the globe including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Museums of Modern Art New York and Tokyo and Centre Beaubourg (Pompidou), Paris.

Since setting up his own eponymous design company in 2002, Tom's work has become even more prominent. The Tom Dixon brand gave Tom a platform to produce iconic designs such as Mirror Ball, Copper Shade, Wingback chair and Beat light. The company now sells in 63 countries with permanent set-ups in England, America and Hong Kong.

In 2004 Proventus, the Swedish-based private investment company, teamed up with Tom Dixon to establish Design Research with Tom acting as Creative Director. The brand's recent awards and nominations include 'Designer of the Year', London Design Museum, 'Best Lighting Design', ICFF show, 'Best Accessory' Elle Decoration and 'Designer of the Year 2008', Architektur & Wohnen Magazine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gorgeous fixture, but not a ton of light... Husband and I had been drooling over this fixture for some time. Finally pulled the trigger and made it a Christmas present to each other. It is installed over our dining room table now, and we love it. The contrast of the black matte exterior with the hammered brass interior is gorgeous. My one disappointment is with the amount of light the one small halogen bulb puts out-- it's very low lighting. Much lower than our previous fixture. We may have to add another one to supplement. I recommend this fixture if using it as an accent light, but as a primary source of illumination you may be left wanting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from sleek and strong...simple elegance with a groovy edge this fixture is great because it's very durable and sturdy. the shape and design and materials are so simple but the fixture has just enough edge to make it a definite statement piece. we used these in multiples which looks great, but they also look just as good by themselves. since the underside is brass it gives a glow to the light. the shape of this dixon pendant, along with the other shapes from this line, will no doubt stand the test of time and be just as relevant in 50 years as they are now....great design, great fixture.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lovely Warm Glow Well packaged and very well thought out in design. Easy to Assemble as all the mounting hardare was included. The light put out by the lamp is a lovely golden color and really brings out the the softness of wood (tables, floors, etc), keep in mind though that the max bulb is a 25 watt so this really is only mood lighting and not really usable for work (reading, desk, etc). Originally thought I would put this on a dimmer but there is not really anywhere to go from the on positon except off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp Statement Piece Always been a fan of Tom Dixon designs. These lamps are modern, well made, and very inspired. I used them in a 'hand built' type residence where attention to artisan detailing made all the difference. The hand hammered brass interior lends texture and contrast to the smooth matte black finished exterior of the lamp. I am always a firm believer in design value and "design for all." It is unfortunate that these gems are so pricey. This is the only downside in my opinion.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful design but no light. The design is beautiful, especially in a group of the other beat lights but beware that the light is only designed to light up the interior of the light itself, not the rest of the room. As long as you don't need to light a room, or even an accent table, these look very nice hanging from your ceiling. If you want to save money, don't even bother wiring them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful! After drooling over this lamp for a while I finally jumped in and bought it. It was shipped very quickly and I was super pleased when I opened it. Just as beautiful as it looks online. It hasn't been hung yet (that's why I can't give it 5 stars until I check out the quality of light) but it will be soon! I can't wait to see it in action.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We are impressed w/ the beat light overall. Quality is great, design -reason we bought it- is exactly what we were looking for. As said, like the light immensely but was slightly disappointed b/c it arrived w/ part of the cord slightly damaged. Went ahead and installed and attempted to fix the problem on our own. Otherwise Y Lighting was incredibly helpful and prompt w/ service etc..
