Design by Charles & Ray Eames, 1910.
Charles and Ray Eames augmented the interior "collage" of the Eames House with numerous objects brought back from their extensive travels. The figure of a black wooden bird - evidently one of their most prized objects of American folk art - has stood in the centre of their living room for over fifty years. Also seen as an accessory in many of the Eameses' photographs, the bird figure from the Appalachian mountain region of the eastern United States. Based on the original artifact and in cooperation with the Eames Family, Vitra is now producing the first series of this figure.
Material(s): Solid alder, black lacquer finish, steel wire
Dimensions: 10.8" H x 3.5" W x 10.9" D

We've wanted one of these for a while and finally decided to get one... couldn't be happier with it... so unique and the construction and materials are very high quality. Very satisfied.
house bird even better than expected
By: BirdWatcher, Homeowner (hallsville, tx)
with two exceptions the eames house bird resembles a carving that might have been made in the tennessee hills in the 1920s. the bird is elegant and will fit anywhere and i'm completely pleased with it. the exceptions are minor: the finish is perfect, maybe too perfect and the eyes remind me of a 1950s teddy bear's eyes. love this bird.
so happy with the house bird. Defintely a collectors piece

This bird is a modern classic.

No matter what your personal style, you'll find an appropriate place for the classic Eames house bird. This bird fits well with almost any tray, box, bowl, vase or decorative object. Place your bird on a console table, credenza, end table or media stand. It's a wonderful companion for other bird artifacts, including l'Oiseau, which you'll find on the yLiving Web site. That'smy next purchase.

I've been wanting this bird for a long time and I finally got it in the last Vitra sale. I am a classic furniture (and accessories) lover, and this bird now stands beautifully in one of the shelves in my living room. With its smooth finish and excellent reproduction (German made), the bird practically looks alive and very alert. The shipping was super fast.

A Beautiful Art Piece!
By: David S., Architect (Carmel, Indiana, USA)
Since I saw a photo of Charles and Ray Eames sitting in their living room with their House Bird near them on the floor, the image stayed with me. As could be expect, Vitra did not disappoint with the quality of this piece. Looking at this House Bird with its beautiful lines definitely stirs up emotions... Maybe one day I'll have a flock of Eames House Birds!
Cool, aesthetically pleasing objet d'art has a life of its own.
By: J. H., Designer (Houston)
VitraâÂÂs Eames house bird is a beautifully crafted and stunning offering well worth the cost â which is reasonable given the quality. Clean lines, attention to detail and the minimalist attributes ensure that wherever you place the house bird, it will make its mark with a subtle presence. Well packaged, the only aspect missing was a brochure addressing the back-story of the piece along with say, the crafting process of the item itself. Perhaps nothing else accompanying the house bird was deemed acceptable by Vitra â rendering the work as a âÂÂjust isâ â but I would prefer an accompaniment with a purchase of this sort. Regardless, this is a fine offering.
The BEST house pet one could hope for...

I've coveted this bird/toy/artwork for 40 years, and since no one was going to give it to me, AND my 50th birthday is less than 6 months away, AND I have never seen it at a lower price, I figured now or never. It did not disappoint! Now, i think I will have to get a mate for him. No bird should live alone! :) THANK YOU!
Piece of art, absolutely love it!

I was so happy to find that the Eames House Bird was available for purchase. I had taken notice of the bird in many articles/pictures of Carles and Ray Eames designs and was always drawn to its shape and simplicity... a perfect symbol of the mid-century modern era. YLiving offered the best price and I am very happy with the service I received. I am thrilled with the quality of the bird and the joy it brings to our home.... he will never leave our nest!

Designer: Charles + Ray Eames
A chair that looked like a potato chip. Another that resembled a "well-used first baseman's mitt." A folding screen that rippled...
With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look."
That look and their relationship with Herman Miller started with molded plywood chairs in the late 1940s and includes the world-renowned Eames lounge chair, now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.View other products by Charles + Ray Eames
Vitra has manufactured furniture designs by Charles & Ray Eames and George Nelson since 1957. Building on this foundation, Vitra has developed a wide range of furnishings for the office, for the home and for public spaces in collaboration with progressive designers. Yet Vitra is more than just a design-oriented manufacturing company. The name also stands for the Vitra Design Museum, for a collection of modern furniture and its accompanying archive, for workshops and publications on topics of design, and for an architectural concept that unites buildings by Frank Gehry, Nicholas Grimshaw, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, Herzog & de Meuron and SANAA at the Vitra Headquarters in Birsfelden (Switzerland) and on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany).
Product longevity is central to Vitra's contribution to sustainable development; short-lived styling is avoided at all costs. This can be seen most clearly in the classical pieces of furniture that have been used for decades, had several owners and have then even ended up as a part of a collection. For Vitra, the manufacture of sustainable products means intense pre-production development, where the highest-grade materials are selected and tests are carried out that simulate 15 years of use. In order to enforce and monitor sustainable development in all business activities of the company, a work group was formed in 1986 by the name of 'Vitra and the Environment'. Because of this, Vitra can proudly claim that it has been dedicated to sustainability for nearly a quarter of a century.View other products from Vitra
