The Polder XL is an expansive modular sofa designed to hold court in any modern interior. Named for Holland's artificial land that has been reclaimed from the sea by means of dikes and drainage canals, the Polder XL is low-lying, flat and has just as much emphasis on the horizontal lines. Inspired by her native land, designer Hella Jongerius chose five carefully selected color combinations and fabric qualities for the Polder XL, accentuating them with high-tech threads and large buttons made of natural materials. As a result, the Polder XL brings the beauty of the land inside without sacrificing comfort.

Vitra has manufactured furniture designs by Charles & Ray Eames and George Nelson since 1957. In order to enforce and monitor sustainable development in all business activities of the company, a work group was formed in 1986 by the name of 'Vitra and the Environment'. Because of this, Vitra can proudly claim that it has been dedicated to sustainability for nearly a quarter of a century.

Hella Jongerius

Dutch designer Hella Jongerius (born 1963) combines craft techniques with modern technology to create objects that are strikingly new and provocative. Jongerius' range is diverse and broadly derived. Her designs typically employ a mélange of media such as ceramics, steel, plastic, felt, and precious metals. The resulting designs emphasize simple forms, rich textures, and materials that often retain traces of their origin and purpose. Jongerius works in Rotterdam where she heads her own design company, JongeriusLab. Her designs have been manufactured and sold by Vitra, Cappellini, and IKEA to name a few. Jongerius' designs are also in the permanent collections of several leading museums including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The first survey of Jongerius work was published by Phaidon in 2003.
