Design by George Nelson, 1961.
By Vitra.

The spoke or sunburst pattern manifested itself in many forms within the George Nelson portfolio of clocks. This wall clock, reissued in 2010, features radiating, dowel spokes in walnut with aluminum end caps.

Design associates George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, Bucky Fuller, and Irving Harper erupted in to a collaborative exercise on clock design one evening over drinks. From that spontaneous evening, grew an estimated 150 unique clocks designed by George Nelson into the 50s and 60s. These icons of modern design remain relevant and imaginative today and are produced by Vitra using the same design specifications as their original producer, the Howard Miller Company.

George Nelson

George Nelson

When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps" — moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of."

Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as antihuman." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding.

Nelson did so as few are able, and, with the help of well-timed zaps, he helped define modern, humane design.

3D Intelligent

Herman Miller's 3D Intelligent back material is a seating technology designed for the SAYL™ Chair. The 3-dimensional mesh-like suspension material is stretched from the Y-Tower at the back of the chair just as cables are stretched from the towers of a suspension bridge. The tension is greater in the transition areas, from the thoracic to the lumbar regions and between the lumbar area and sacrum. "Hinge points" allow these areas to flex and support the healthy, forward rotation of the pelvis. At the same time, less tension in other parts of the back encourages a full range of seated movement.

Y-Tower

Y-Tower is the primary support structure of Herman Miller's SAYL™ Chair. The Y-Tower retains tension, replacing the traditional frame of task chairs. It works like the towers from which a bridge is suspended and combines with a 3D Intelligent suspension material to provide frameless back support that hugs the user's back from resting through reclining, forward leaning and twisting motions.
