Specializing in creating unique, high quality textiles and accessories for the home, Zuzunaga is pioneering what they refer to as supermodern design. Inspired by contemporary architecture, their work performs a very modern kind of alchemy, transforming the analog into the digital, and back again.
Many of Zuzunaga's designs start with a photograph of a modern city-scape. The photo is then compressed into a digital, black and white bitmap, after which a small section of the photo is enlarged to the point where individual pixels become visible. The enlarged section is meticulously colorized, pixel by pixel and the final design is printed or woven into the next Zuzunaga product.
Founded in 2007 by artist and designer Cristian Zuzunaga, whose unique philosophy challenges the meaninglessness of supermodern excess, Barcelona based Zuzunaga creates bright, dynamic textiles from traditional fibers that demand to be touched and played with. Zuzunaga also seeks to put human experience at the center of their products, from conception, through production, and finally to consumption. To that end, many of Zuzunaga's products are hand woven by a company just outside Barcelona called Teixidors. Started as a social project in 1983, Teixidors employs people with a wide range of learning disabilities and at risk of social exclusion, teaching them the art of hand-weaving while developing an exceptional product. Additionally Zuzunaga produces locally in Europe with trusted manufacturers and sources their materials ecologically and sustainably.
Zuzunaga's ultimate goal is to capture the present moment in objects around us, designing products which shape and are shaped by the moment we live in now.
Born in Barcelona, London-based Cristian Zuzunaga studied Typo/Graphic Design at the London College of Communiciation followed by an MA in Communication Art & Design at the Royal College of Art in London. His final degree show was a collaboration with a menswear designer based on the pixel - the icon of our time - and Supermodern Architecture.
Since 2004, Cristian Zuzunaga has been looking at the city as a metaphor, a living organism that evolves and changes in a way that reflects our own evolution. Using architecture and the way global cities such as Barcelona, London, New York or Shanghai are constructed inspires and gives form to his unique visual vocabulary. He uses a combination of graphic design with letterpress and screen-printing techniques to create colorful visual landscapes.
His clients include Kvadrat, Ligne Roset, Christophe Delcourt, Tate Gallery and nanimarquina.View other products by Cristian Zuzunaga
