Alexander Girard

Alexander Girard was an architect and interior and furniture designer born in 1907. Raised in Florence, Italy, he studied architecture in London in 1924. He was widely known for his contributions to the field of American textile design, particularly through his work with Herman Miller where he created fabrics for George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. His work often infused vibrant colors, intricate patterns and a deep sense of cultural richness. Girard's oeuvre reflected a keen understanding of the interplay between design and human emotion. His collaboration with Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson at the Herman Miller furniture company led to iconic furniture pieces and innovative office environments. For Vitra, Girard created a collection of colorful wooden dolls that represented people and animals. He died in 1993 at the age of 86.
