Modernist Gene Hurwitt stumbled into the plastic industry in 1960 by way of a purchase of a failing plastic factory in Sausalito, California; from there, Hurwitt began producing AMACs first product, transparent plastic boxes originally used in pharmaceutical companies. The no-frills, utilitarian boxes caught on and, by 1966, Hurwitts collection scored a permanent spot at the MoMA. The now family-owned business continues to make plastic boxes in all sizes and colors as well as handy trinkets, such as paperclips and eyeglass repair kits.
