Editor’s Picks: Puffy Poufs & Awesome Ottomans

All hail, the mighty ottoman! No matter how comfortable a chair may be, you’re never truly at ease until you put your feet up. Versatile functionality makes ottomans and poufs absolute necessities to relax. Whether you use them as extra seating, a cushy spot to rest your feet or an impromptu table, these hardworking pieces take up little space and offer plenty of bang for your buck. Here are some of my favorites.

Dane Ottoman

Dane Ottoman by Edgar Blazona, from TrueModern

A large, plush cushion and simple legs make the Dane Ottoman the perfect partner for two. A firm base combined with a loose fiber-filled pillow makes this ottoman a great extra seat as well. The clean lines mean this ottoman would look good in modern or even traditional interiors.

Eames® Ottoman

Eames® Ottoman by Charles + Ray Eames, from Herman Miller

If you’re familiar with classic modern design, you’ll easily recognize the Eames Ottoman. Designed to accompany the Eames® Lounge Chair, this modern classic embodies luxury. From the elegant frame to the leather upholstery and shock mounted cushion, this ottoman is a vacation for weary feet. Sleek and luxurious, it would look right at home in an urban loft, mid-century modern home or modern bachelor pad.

Ruff Pouf

This pouf makes me think of a fluffy tutu. The unexpected two-tone design and ruffled sides means the Ruff Pouf really stands out in a room. The ruffle is made from wool felt and it surrounds a circular drum center that gives it structure.

Mini Basketweave Cube Pouf

Mini Basketweave Turquoise Cube Pouf from Chilewich

The texture of the Mini Basketweave Turquoise Cube Pouf gives the impression of a natural woven fiber in an easy-to-clean vinyl. Intended as a multi-use piece, it can serve as an ottoman, extra seat or side table. The mold and mildew resistant material means this ottoman is great for a family home where spills are common. I love the bright turquoise color, but it comes in a variety of shades if turquoise isn’t your thing.

Barcelona Stool

Barcelona Stool by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, from Knoll

One of my personal favorites, the Barcelona Stool is truly elegant and a feast for the eye. From the sleek frame that gives the footstool a light appearance to the tufted leather cushion, this footstool screams modern. Another classic design, Barcelona would excel in a sophisticated penthouse, a classic modern interior or a sleek minimal interior.

Platner Ottoman

Platner Ottoman by Warren Platner, from Knoll

Like an alien mushroom sprouting from the ground, the Platner Ottoman is an easily recognizable classic. From the futuristic bent wire base to the rounded cushion top, this ottoman beckons you to put your feet up and relax. Platner would easily complement a space-age style design, sleek industrial loft or a modern pop art interior.

Mochi Pouf

Mochi Pouf by Hella Jongerius, from Vitra

Cute and colorful, the Mochi Pouf will brighten up your life. Inspired by mochi desserts, this pouf has bright contrast stitching for added detail. The removable cover allows for easy cleaning, making the Mochi Pouf a great choice for a kids room or modern family room.

Bandas Big Pouf B

Bandas Big Pouf B from Gan Rugs

The unexpected and playful pattern of the Bandas Big Pouf B is just waiting to make a statement in more casual environments. Set low to the ground, the piece is made for relaxing. Pair several poufs together and stretch out. Or pull it up to a low profile sofa, and your feet will have the best lounging spot in the room.

Clip Round Table Ottoman

Clip Round Table Ottoman by Milo Baughman, from Thayer Coggin

The Clip Round Table Ottoman goes the extra mile with versatility and high end design. Firm padding and a removable top give Clip an extra layer of luxury and allows it to withstand use as a table or seat. Clip’s clean, modern lines would look fantastic in a mid-century modern or contemporary interior.

Tijuana Cylindrical Pouf

Tijuana Cylindrical Pouf by Rosita Missoni, from Missoni Home

When it comes to bold patterns and colors, Missoni Home never disappoints. I love their new Tijuana Cylindrical Pouf. While it has a nice bold print, it’s a little more subtle than Missoni’s usual style, making it easier to bring into a variety of spaces. A handle helps you move this pouf from room to room, so you can always have it handy. Whether used as a footrest or as an extra seat, this cheerful print will put a smile on your face.

Marino Footstool

Marino Footstool from Ercol

Marino’s distinguishing ash wood frame gives it a classic mid-century modern look despite its recent arrival on the design scene. Topped with a plush cushion, the Marino Footstool offers just the right combination of support and comfort. I love the contrast of the red cushion against the dark finish.

Upcycle Ottoman

Upcycle Ottoman from Gus Modern

Few people in the world are not coffee lovers. For those hardcore coffee lovers, strong believers in recycling or both, the Upcycle Ottoman is for you. Upholstered using recycled coffee bean bags, each ottoman is truly unique. The fun patterns of the bags add an extra touch of interest to this useful cube. This design would work well in a modern eclectic space, man cave or game room.

Oslo Pouf

Oslo Pouf from Muuto

Clearly Nordic in style, the Oslo Pouf has an eye-catching shape and slender legs that create a sense of lightness. While the surface of this ottoman may seem as if it is only lightly padded, you will be delighted to discover it is actually densely padded for a comfy, soft surface. The Oslo Pouf will take minimalist and Scandinavian style interiors by storm.

Elements 005

Elements 005 by Jaime Hayon, from Moooi

The uniquely shaped Elements 005 was created to function as an ottoman or side table. Remove its lid and you’ll find convenient storage space for small items. Add the Elements 001 tray, and the ottoman becomes a side table. As part of Moooi’s Elements Collection, Elements 005 can be combined with the other pieces of the collection to create an avant-garde modern sculpture.
